โUntil recently, patients weren't my only concern. Since 2017, President Trump has been trying to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which gives immigrants like myself the right to live and work here. For now we can stay in the U.S., but for how long?
Over half a million Dreamers are considered essential workers - we are saving lives and helping America fight this virus. With no visitors allowed, nurses like me step in to listen to a patientโs fears, hold their hand, and provide comfort. During this difficult time, helping someone smile is the least I can do.
I came to the U.S. from Mexico at age 3 because my parents wanted a better life for me and my sister. I learned that the American dream comes at a price. We didnโt have much growing up and they sacrificed so much for my future, including separation from family in Mexico. I donโt know how I can ever repay them. My dadโs mother died a few years ago and it broke his heart to miss her funeral.
I wanted to become a nurse since college, but I needed a Social Security number to do so. I relied on God during this time, and I decided to work toward a degree despite the uncertainty. When DACA was announced in 2012, I was overjoyed.
As a new nurse, the ICU is tough, but I love being able to work with our Spanish-speaking population. Iโve noticed that as soon as I enter the room speaking Spanish, these patients relax and are more comfortable expressing their needs. This fall, Iโll be one of the first DACA recipients in a doctorate program in anesthesia.
Itโs been heartwarming to see so many people showing their appreciation for nurses and health care workers during the pandemic, but if weโre so essential, why donโt our immigration laws reflect that? Congress has the power to give us a pathway to citizenship, honoring our contributions to this great country - and the only home weโve ever known.โ
โs story as a frontliner is incredible, and we had to share this heartfelt reflection as an immigrant too - she is a true example of sacrifice and dedication๐๐ผ

โSometimes I think I'm a bit of a witch - a good witch of course.โ
Meet Patrรญcia Alvarez Baptista, Manager at Fiocruz, leading the team responsible for producing the new coronavirus diagnostic kits for testing throughout Brazil.
In this critical moment of global public health emergency, the commitment of public servants like Patricia, often invisible, makes the difference. Every day she faces the fear of being infected by the virus and goes to work.
โWe are like a family of 9 women. I work with molecular diagnostic development based on technology that has also been used to confirm cases of zika, dengue and chikungunya. I evaluate all the inputs. Every lot that goes into production is done under my coordination.โ
Patriciaโs work has had a complete turnaround after the pandemic hit, but its effects have impacted her personal life too.
โMy routine and worries have changed - as a mother I am always present, often controlling. With the pandemic I had to reinvent myself as mother, woman and professional. When I go to work my son is all by himself. I leave the house repeating to myself "he is 15 years old, he will survive, he has all the structure he needs".
I sleep late thinking about work, waking up in the middle of the night worried about whether we will have good results. Before I realize it, the day dawns and everything starts again.โ
Looking at the bigger picture, Patricia takes pride in her service.
โI'm a civil servant, wearing the SUS shirt, motivated to give back to my society. If we donโt have a healthy public, we have nothing. I leave early every day to work and come back with the feeling: โmission accomplished!โ. I am proud to be SUS.
Despite everything, Patricia has found the determination to fight on.
โQuitting doesn't suit me. I say that in life "if you fall down, get right back up".โ
Patriciaโs story is one that can be seen as an inspiration for all of us. She is an example for women in science, a representative of innovation, and more than anything, a beacon of hope.
Many thanks to Patricia for sharing her story and Republica.org for coming together with us for this cause๐๐ผ(link in bio for more!)

"Hi, my name is Marรญa Young and I am a healthcare frontliner in Missouri City, Texas.
I work at a nursing home for the elderly - we wear our PPE constantly to help protect them at all times. I see how difficult it is for them, not having their families around - it's just something that needs to be done to prevent exposing them.
Iโm proud to be a healthcare hero. We all are hoping and praying we find a vaccine and we can all get back to normal.
Sincerely,
Marรญa Young - Resident Care Specialist"
This time has been hard on us, but even more so on our elderly who have been both at a higher risk, and unable to see their loved ones and family. In a situation like this, we salute and others like her who stay by their side and are there for them๐๐ผ
