What if trying to be “consistent” is actually getting in your way?

That September energy can be powerful. You’re ready to eat more plant-based, go vegan, get back to vegan, try new things, make some changes.

But then the fantasy of from now on kicks in:

What about next month?
What about the holidays?
What about travel?
What if I can’t keep doing this forever?

And suddenly you’re planning your future behavior instead of doing anything today.

In this episode, we’re skipping the pressure to become your Future Consistent Self and focusing on something much more useful:

🌱 What can I actually do today?
🌱 What would be worthwhile even if I only did it once?
🌱 What’s already working that I don’t want to mess with?

Because consistency isn’t something you accomplish today. It’s something you discover later, looking back.

“I don’t know yet” is not the same as “I can’t.”

Change is hard for almost everyone. But some of us judge ourselves so harshly. "This is hard, I have no follow-through.” "I always give up.” “If I can’t commit FOREVER I shouldn’t even start."

Commitment is not a prediction about how perfectly you will behave for the rest of your life. It's a decision about the direction you want to keep choosing and learning.

You don’t know how well you will handle every trip, holiday, restaurant, health change, or family dinner. Not knowing does not disqualify you. It leaves room to learn.

Stop treating uncertainty as a problem and the process can become more curious, experimental, and even fun.

This week on Vedge Your Best: - Can You Be Committed Without Being Certain?

The skills we build through a plant-based practice—planning, self-advocacy, recovery, and self-trust— support every other change we want to make.

Your vegan journey is more than a collection of food choices. It’s a place to learn what actually helps us follow through when life does not cooperate.

An imperfect experience can even remind us why the choice matters.

Where do you need a better plan—and where do you need more trust in your ability to recover?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. That is also why I believe so strongly in coaching: not to hand you somebody else’s perfect plan, but to help you build a practice that fits your values, your life, and the person you actually are.

What if willpower was never the problem?

If you’ve been struggling to move toward a vegan or plant-based way of eating or toward any change that really matters to you, it’s easy to reach for words like discipline, willpower, follow-through, or motivation.

But what if there’s nothing wrong with you?

You may actually be operating exactly as your programming has taught you to operate.

That’s the idea behind this week’s episode of Vedge Your Best: you can know exactly why you want to change your eating, your health, the animals, the environment, the planet—and still find yourself unable to do it consistently.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need more willpower.

It may mean you need to install a different program.

This week on Vedge Your Best, we're taking a break from the heavy stuff. Episode 308 is practical and more for me than anyone else.

This week I found "DUMP" scrawled at the top of my own list — one word that told me nothing about how to begin.

If you're a multi-passionate, multi-hyphenate, multitasking human flying by the seat of your pants this summer (camp schedules! vacations! garden overload!), this refresher is for you.

✏️ Why a one-word item is a project, not a task ✏️ The 4 questions that rescue anything stuck on your list ✏️ The 1-2-3 rule for planning your day ✏️ Why your to-do list is really a note to Future You

Tell me in the comments: what's the vaguest one-word item on YOUR list right now? (My clients confessed: "Camp." "Basement." "Uncle Paul." 😂)

Have you ever read a book that shaped an entire movement—even if you weren't sure you'd agree with everything in it?

That's why I chose Animal Liberation Now by Peter Singer as the first book in my vegan personal curriculum.

I'm not reading it to collect quotes or confirm my existing beliefs. I'm reading it to better understand the ideas that have influenced modern conversations about animals, ethics, and veganism.

In this week's episode of Vedge Your Best, I unpack some of the book's foundational concepts—including speciesism, sentience, utilitarianism, and the difference between animal welfare and animal rights—in plain English. I also discuss some of the significant criticisms of Singer's work and why engaging with influential ideas doesn't require accepting every conclusion.

Understanding an argument is different from agreeing with it. That's what this summer's personal curriculum is all about.

Question for you: What's one book that changed the way you think about an important topic?

Is the algorithm your Professor?

This summer, I’m building a personal curriculum around veganism—its philosophy, history, ethics and practice, beginning with Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation Now. I don’t expect to agree with every argument. I DO want to understand the ideas that have shaped this movement instead of learning through 15-second sound bites on social media.

A personal curriculum doesn’t have to look academic. It might include books, documentaries, recipes, interviews, classes, field trips or experiments. The important thing is giving YOUR brain the background and context to increase your understanding instead of simply scrolling through unrelated clickbait.

This week on Vedge Your Best, I share why I am doing this and why Animal Liberation Now is the first book on my list.

What subject would YOU build a personal curriculum around?

Lifelong Vegan learner? What belongs on the syllabus for Vedge Your Best 101?

Documentaries may bring most of us into this space. But could books be how we stay, grow, and get better at it? Reading might be its own form of activism.

This week, a personal vegan curriculum. 6 foundational books to help us think more deeply about animals, food, ethics, psychology, health, and the environment. No homework. No requirement to agree with me OR the authors.

An invitation to become harder to fool, more curious, and better equipped for the complicated conversations that come with living in a vegan direction.

The biggest obstacle of any movement isn't always what you expect.

This week on Vedge Your Best, I'm talking about what actually makes change happen AND what can stop it. The research is more hopeful than your Instagram feed would have you believe. We may be a lot closer to a tipping point than the trolls in your comments make it feel.Episode 305 is about what it actually takes to build a movement that's harder to ignore — and it's less than you think."

📢 Good news, but we're not done yet.

When I recorded Episode 304, the House version of the Farm Bill included language that could wipe out state animal welfare laws across the country.

Since then, the Senate Agriculture Committee released its draft, and that language was left out.

That's a real win.

It also proves something important. When people speak up, it can make a difference.

But this isn't the finish line. The language could still be added back during the Senate process or during negotiations between the House and Senate.

If you haven't already, this is still the moment to contact your senators. It only takes a few minutes, and if your senators serve on the Agriculture Committee, your voice carries even more weight right now.

If you haven't listened to Episode 304 yet, I hope you will. There's a story about farmers who did the right thing and are now paying the price that gets to the heart of why this fight matters.
