Elegguá Workshop Recap 🔥

A look back at our latest Wednesday Specialty Workshop, where we explored rhythm, movement, musicality, timing, and coordination through Elegguá.

The goal of these workshops is not just to learn a sequence, but to understand the movement, the rhythm behind it, and how Afro-Cuban concepts can connect back to the way we dance modern Timba.

A lot of work goes into the details — breaking down the movement, cleaning up timing, and then putting everything together as a group.

This is where the specialty workshops really connect back to your social dancing.

In the last part of each workshop, we take the rhythm and movement we’ve been studying and work on **how it actually shows up in modern Timba**.

In this Makuta workshop, we focused on:

* recognizing the right musical moment
* finding the proper timing
* transitioning from our basic step into Makuta
* and returning smoothly back into Casino/Timba without forcing it

The goal is not just to learn isolated Afro-Cuban movement, but to understand **when, why, and how to use it in your dancing**.

That connection between tradition, musicality, and modern social dance is a big part of what these workshops are about.

Our next Wednesday Specialty Workshop will be **Introduction to Afro-Cuban Dance: Elegguá — Rhythm, Movement & Musicality** on **September 23rd**. DM me if you want a spot.

A breakdown from last Thursday’s **Advanced Class** 🔥

This one-on-one Casino turn pattern features a **Setenta with a double turn**, followed by bringing the lady **“por abajo” — underneath the arm**.

More than just learning the sequence, we break down the details that make it actually work in social dancing: **clear lead mechanics, timing, hand placement, connection, and follow technique** throughout the pattern.

The goal is always the same: don’t just memorize the move — understand **how and why it works** so you can lead and follow it naturally. 💃🏽🕺🏽
