Nothing like “Pie in Your Face” to celebrate the end of classes! When it comes to supporting the students (and helping student groups raise money), I’m always happy to help. I might smell like shaving cream for days, but thank goodness it wasn’t actual whipped cream!

Wonderful visit to the national conference! I went with my amazing colleague to attend presentations, network, and comb through the impressive expo. I met and saw so many wonderful people, and I really enjoyed trying the new Peter Infeld cello strings by that have brought out a beautiful resonance in my cello (their rosin is also top-notch!). The conference was in Atlanta, and I was glad my wife could come too because the three of us shared some delicious meals at the end of each day. Looking forward to the next one in San Francisco next year!

In February, I took two of my students to the Cayman Islands to run a 3-day cello intensive. We worked with roughly 30 students from age 5 through college, doing technique classes, cello ensemble rehearsals, lessons, presentations, and a concert. This group of students was present, positive, respectful, and so much fun to work with! I am looking forward to returning this fall.

My students .jayna.p and handled themselves like pros, and I am so proud of the work they and the students did in such a condensed period of time.

This was made possible through the collaboration of and and I think the students spent valuable time focusing on their cello skills. Also, it’s hard to beat the clear water and the stunning sunsets there, which were an added bonus to the intensive. Massive thanks to the supporters and to the students for their focus and participation!

📷 Scenes from the MTSU Cello Studio 📷
1) Trinkets: these are a few of my favorite and necessary things
2) Residents: cellos, a viola da gamba, and a Baroque cello
3) Whiteboard: I enjoy drawing shapes to make philosophical and technical ideas more concrete, and this week was a discussion about the challenge of an artistic pursuit when you realize the gap between your actual skill level and your desired skill level
4) Business: my new cards have arrived

What’s in your teaching/practicing/studio/sanctuary space?

What a fun run of concerts over the past week! My colleague and pianist Dr. Eunbyol Ko is a marvelous player and a brilliant musician, and I so enjoyed playing the Prokofiev Sonata with her. We played in Dallas and outside of San Antonio last week, culminating with a concert on our home stage at MTSU. I was humbled by the number of students and faculty who attended, and I have enjoyed hearing everyone’s reactions (especially to the singing pieces from my album!). I am lucky to be part of such a supportive and involved community here at MTSU, and I’m already planning the next repertoire with Eunbyol and other colleagues, coming soon to a concert hall near you!

My first production playing with the Palm Beach Opera! The performances of Tosca are happening this weekend, and I must say that the cello quartet in Act 3 is one of the highlights (at least for me!). I earned a section cello position with the organization and look forward to working on several wonderful operas this spring.
