Cybersecurity Awareness Month usually focuses on which AI tools a district approved. The harder question is whether anyone is using them.
When an approved tool goes unused and teachers turn to unapproved alternatives, that’s shadow AI. It usually reflects a real need: educators are looking for practical ways to save time and support students.
If an approved tool is hard to use, the need doesn't go away. The work moves outside the district's view. Which makes low adoption a security signal, not only an instructional one.
The answer isn't to blame teachers. It's to make the approved tool the reliable one, clarify what information can be shared, and give educators a clear path to the support they need.
