Many people collapse controlling actions with controlling emotions. We don’t want to control our emotions. Emotion is the wild horse on the prairie. We can allow our emotions to roam free. However, once we experience our emotions, the next steps are crucial:
🚫 You can “REACT,” which would mean you are acting on past trauma, patterns, and an unconscious way of being. That typically does not end well for you or those around you.
✔️ You can “RESPOND,” which would mean you take a moment, breathe, and bring consciousness to the action you take next. Stopping to think about what you are about to do after experiencing your emotions is vital in personal growth and especially in relationships. It’s called awareness.
This is the difference between acting on your past in a way that does not serve you OR owning your past and choosing a new future.
One way to support yourself in responding rather than reacting is to get aligned with a grand vision.
What is a higher purpose or way of life that you commit to?
Maybe your vision is “a world that is loving, kind, and compassionate.” If that is your vision, and you are in an experience of being triggered or emotional, you can allow your experience to happen, but stop, breathe, think, and align yourself with your vision before you take action.
This may be the difference between you yelling at someone and playing the victim OR having a rational conversation coming from love that serves your higher good.
Either way, you should allow your emotions to bubble up.
It’s what you do next that will show you your divinity, evolution, and grace.
