We are excited to announce the kickoff of the Candler Youth Leadership Program for the 2026-2027 school year. This program is sponsored each school year by the Metter-Candler Chamber of Commerce. We are reaching out to our local schools to invite students in grades 10th, 11th, and 12th to take part in this leadership fundamentals program. The students will be chosen based on their application, resume and teacher recommendation. During this eight-month program, students will have the opportunity to learn more about our community through leadership workshops, team building, local tours and community service projects - all while learning the foundation of what becoming a great leader is all about.

Applicants must be a resident of Candler County classified as a high school sophomore, junior, or senior at Metter High School, Metter College & Career Academy, David Emanuel Academy, Pinewood Christian Academy or Bulloch Academy. If the student attends Metter High School but lives outside of the county, he/she may apply as well.

Applications must be returned to the Metter-Candler Chamber of Commerce by Monday, August 31, 2026 at 5:00 pm. Late applications will not be accepted.

If you have any questions, we can be reached at this email ([email protected]) or the Metter-Candler Chamber of Commerce office – (912) 685-2159. Thank you!

Students in Mrs. Cindi Jarrell’s Introduction to Healthcare Science class recently received hands-on fire safety training with the Metter Fire Department.

Fire department personnel taught students about fire prevention and safety, the different types of fires and fire extinguishers, and how to correctly operate a fire extinguisher during an emergency. Students learned the proper steps for safely approaching and extinguishing a small fire before putting those skills into practice.

Following the demonstration, firefighters set a controlled training fire, giving each student the opportunity to use a fire extinguisher and successfully extinguish the flames. This hands-on experience allowed students to practice an important workplace safety skill while learning directly from local emergency professionals.

The activity directly supports the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Introduction to Healthcare Science, particularly HS-IHS-2: Demonstrate safe work practices and follow health and safety policies and procedures to prevent injury and illness. More specifically, HS-IHS-2.7 requires students to illustrate and demonstrate fire safety in a home and healthcare setting, while HS-IHS-2.8 addresses basic emergency procedures and protocols, including contacting emergency personnel and following appropriate emergency procedures.

Mrs. Jarrell and her students would like to thank the Metter Fire Department for taking the time to provide this valuable, real-world learning experience and for helping prepare students to respond safely and confidently during an emergency.

MHS/MCCA FBLA and Shepeard Blood Center will be hosting a blood drive on Friday, August 28 on the Bloodmobile buses in front of the high school from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome!

Donors should be sure to eat a nutritious breakfast and drink lots of water on the day of the blood drive. Additionally, donors should begin now eating iron rich foods in their meals to help avoid low iron which eliminates a person from donating.

Students must be at least 16 years of age, meet height and weight requirements, AND have parent permission to donate blood. Morning donors will receive a free breakfast item. And all blood donors will receive snacks and a free piece of Shepeard Blood Center swag while supplies last.

Additionally, students who donate (must be 16 and have parent consent) OR who recruit donors on their behalf three times during one school year will earn a Red Cord to wear at graduation. This is our FIRST blood drive of the year, so this is your first chance to work toward earning that Red Cord for this school year!!! If you are supporting a student, please fill out the student card when you give blood!

Our goal is to have at least 75 people present to be blood donors on Friday, August 28.

Remember each blood donation saves up to three lives!
