The new show is up at Maquoketa Art Experience! This retrospective exhibition by new Maquoketa resident Timothy Rees features 57 paintings and a variety of drawings from his first decade of painting. Stretching/preparing large canvases today starting around 930/10ish

Tips for taking your open studio drawing to the next level (this was a student open studio drawing we worked on in class for about 5-10 minutes).
1. Reduce information (value, edge, noise) in the shadow (stump it down)
2. Add a few subtle values in the light side. There should always be more information and value in the lights than the darks. In this case, added with a stump.
3. Strengthen your core shadows (with a 2B, the core shadows on the forehead, cheek, and nose are deepened.
4. Address all the hard edges (form in front of form and cast shadows) and create a hierarchy to ensure variety.
5. Don't forget to keep your mouth relatively soft.
6. Ensure that highlights (not center lights) read as harder edges.

Painting Students- don't forget to bring your still life objects!

This is the underpainting white and underpainting medium that should completely dry within 30 minutes to allow top layers. Use for closed grisaille or ebauche. They're made by Rublev, order online through their natural pigments site. For open grisaille, just use thinner.
