Paradise in the mid-summer garden.

Grape harvest has begun and we are already jolting into harvest mode; full shifts before the sun rises into late summer heat. A cadence that will continue into November with our olive harvest.

Early spring warmth and mild summer temperatures this year have kept gardens lush, but yields light for fruit. I am interested to see how this affects our flower gardens. Every year is new and different and interesting. I think you have to be truly curious and also truly insane to farm.

We hope to never take for granted the opportunity we have been given to extend beauty out into the world, to harmonize with the land we love, to create something that is genuine. And we hope that you can feel taste and experience the intention that goes into too.

High up in the Mayacamas range we’ve started planting into our gardens a variety of flowers (psychotropic, beneficial, natives) and hot weather vegetables.

The cows grazed through the cover crops from our gardens this spring, but any remaining vegetation is lightly tilled in, beds shaped and mulched by our tractor.

Plants are going in and in no time at all we will be at the end of the season looking back. From here on out everything seems to happen so fast, but for now we will enjoy the anticipation each new season brings.

Seeds are 💥 popped and we have 🌱 sprouts !

These ladies will be going into the ground in Ukiah in about 4 weeks time among the array of flowers and vegetables that they will grow up beside.

Spring has truly sprung and we are hurtling into the heat of summer day by day. Excited to see where this year takes us.

If you have been following us for a while, you probably know that we are BIG on integrated grazing. We strive to grow in a way that is regenerative to our soil and strictly managed cattle grazing is a wonderful way to maximize added nutrients and bacterial cycling through the production of manure.

The cows love the vetch and clovers we planted in the fall and are very efficient at taking down the grasses that grow up around the gardens as well. These plant residues then will break down and decompose back into the soil adding more nutrient sequestration. As a low till operation, the more material the ruminants are able to break down the less turning over we have to do.

While I am more of a shepherdess myself, for these farms using cattle allows us to put fewer animals on the land and for a shorter period of time. The rancher who farms these cows also uses them for his meat operation, so it is a win-win for us both; The cows get high quality forage and we get better soil!

Check out our blog for more on the benefits of ruminants to our operation!

Happy 4/20!

This time of year we like to throw it back to some past memories of our days on the farm and this season’s is a love letter to our farm truck OLD GOLD.

Read more about it on the blog and if you are lucky, you can pick up an Old Gold 1 g to commemorate the season.
