Today, Southwest students took an important step toward their future as they explored transfer opportunities through the One Step Closer (OSC) program, a partnership between Southwest Tennessee Community College and the University of Memphis.

A special thank you to Matthew Rhodes, assistant director of admissions, for sharing valuable information about transferring Southwest credits to UofM, what it's like to be a UofM student, and the many resources and benefits available through the program.

OSC offers a free online orientation featuring eight modules that guide students through every stage of the transfer process, including transfer requirements, academic planning, financial aid, student life and support services.

Students also had the opportunity to connect with representatives at an information fair and learn more about UofM's academic programs and campus resources.

We're excited about this seamless pathway from Southwest to UofM and the impact it will have on students pursuing their journey from an associate degree to a bachelor's degree.

Strong leadership starts with the right people.

Leadership begins with people. That was the focus of the second session of this year’s President's Leadership Academy, where participants explored Jim Collins' Good to Great principle of getting the right people on the bus and in the right seats.

During the session, President Dr. Tracy D. Hall challenged attendees to focus on the "who" before the "what," emphasizing the importance of hiring and developing adaptable, self-motivated people who can collaborate across departments, embrace change and stay aligned with the College's mission. As Southwest continues to evolve and strengthen pathways for student success, Dr. Hall said that institutional adaptability, transparency and teamwork remain essential.

Leadership consultant Dr. Ashley Macken, Ed.S. introduced and guided participants through an exercise on CliftonStrengths, helping them gain greater insight into their leadership styles and how they can leverage their strengths to better serve students, colleagues and the community.

The Academy also welcomed special guest Duncan F. Williams, founder and chairman of Duncan Williams Asset Management, who shared powerful lessons from his leadership journey. Williams reminded attendees that great leaders don't always have the answers. Instead, they listen, seek help when needed and focus on building strong teams. He stressed that culture is defined not by what organizations say they value, but by what they are willing to uphold and defend.

Among the day's key takeaways:
✅ The quality of an organization never exceeds the quality of its people.
✅ Community impact matters more than rankings and metrics alone.
✅ Success comes from focusing on what you do best and doing it consistently well.
✅ Students may not remember every policy, but they will remember the people who believed in them and supported their success.
✅ Greatness is achieved when ordinary people consistently do the right things for the right reasons.

Thank you to Dr. Hall, Duncan Williams and Dr. Macken for sharing their leadership insights and experiences, and for reinforcing why getting the right people on the bus is essential to building a culture of excellence.

Faculty and staff got an inside look at the many moving parts of Southwest Tennessee Community College's Finance Department during the Financial Forum on Oct. 15.

Through a creative soap opera-themed presentation, "The Days of Our Lives in the Finance Department," as narrated by Dr. Gerald Shields, interim vice president of Finance & Administrative Services, the Finance team brought everyday processes to life while helping employees better understand the work that keeps the college running smoothly.

From budget planning to payroll to purchasing, attendees learned about the many functions managed by the department and gained practical tips to navigate processes more effectively.

The forum was a great reminder that behind every purchase order, reimbursement, paycheck, and budget decision is a dedicated team working to support the college's mission and ensure resources are managed responsibly.

Thank you to the Finance team for making a complex topic engaging, informative, and even a little dramatic!

The Southwest Tennessee Community College Foundation has received a $350,000 grant from the Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis to support the College's Vocational Education Scholarship Program to expand educational opportunities and provide critical support services for students pursuing degrees and workforce credentials.

The award continues a longstanding partnership between Southwest and the Women's Foundation that has helped remove barriers to education and create pathways to economic mobility for students and their families.

The funding will support students pursuing associate degrees in high-demand fields, including computer information technology, artificial intelligence technology, nursing, business, mechanical engineering technology and biotechnology, as well as students enrolled in short-term workforce training programs through the college’s workforce development division.

The scholarship covers tuition, books, emergencies, unexpected financial hardships and transportation needs - barriers that often prevent students from enrolling or completing their education.

The Women’s Foundation partnership reinforces Southwest’s role as a trusted education and workforce development partner for organizations working to reduce poverty, widen access and improve outcomes for women, children and families across Greater Memphis.

Southwest Tennessee Community College has been awarded a $1,073,708 federal Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant from the U.S. Department of Education to provide support for student-parents pursuing their education while raising young children.

The four-year CCAMPIS grant will help Southwest expand access to affordable, high-quality child care for Pell Grant-eligible Southwest students with children. The funding will assist approximately 30 student-parents each year through the fiscal year 2030.

For many student-parents at Southwest, balancing coursework, employment and family responsibilities can be overwhelming, and the high cost of child care often forces students to delay pursuing their educational goals. Through the CCAMPIS grant program, students will be able to receive child care subsidies and wraparound support services designed to keep them enrolled and persist toward graduation.

Southwest has operated two on-campus CCAMPIS supported child care services for student-parents since 2005, located at the Union Avenue and Macon Cove campuses. Together, the centers serve children from six weeks to 5 years of age and provide a safe, nurturing learning environment that supports early childhood development.

For more information, please contact our child care centers at 901-333-4522 or 901-333-5234.
