We join so many around the world in remembering Dolly Parton and the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind.

A gifted songwriter, performer, actor, philanthropist and businesswoman, Dolly was also a passionate champion of literacy. Through her Imagination Library, she helped put books into the hands of millions of children. 📚

Dolly’s story is deeply connected to Tennessee, including Memphis. The first slide features her performing in a photograph preserved in the University Libraries Special Collections.

Learn more about Dolly’s life and legacy through the University Libraries. "Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton" and "Dolly Parton, Gender, and Country Music" are available as eBooks with unlimited access. Our collections also include Dolly’s children’s book "I Am a Rainbow," along with CDs, vinyl recordings and other materials. Additional resources may be available through Interlibrary Loan.

The books featured here have also appeared in our virtual book displays celebrating "Spunky Women of History" and "International Women’s Day."

Her music brought joy to generations, and her generosity and commitment to literacy will continue to make a difference for generations to come.

The University Libraries’ "Research Skills for Graduate Students" webinar series returns for Fall 2026 with free, live, online sessions designed to support graduate-level research.

Topics range from finding library resources and using citation management tools to dissertation access and embargoes, ethical GenAI practices, Census data, scholarly presence, literature reviews and more.

📅 The first webinar is September 9, with sessions continuing through December 1.

All University of Memphis students, faculty and staff focused on graduate-level research skills development are welcome to attend.

On August 19, 1966, the Beatles performed two shows at the Mid-South Coliseum as part of their final concert tour.

This month’s 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗜𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 takes us back to that day with photographs and a ticket stub from the Shelby County, TN, collection in the University Libraries’ Special Collections.
