50 degrees outside, April 14 and a female tiger swallowtail emerged from her chrysalis. She is the Black type, rather than yellow, but you can still see the stripes on the inside of her wings!
Today a black swallowtail female butterfly emerged from her chrysalis, my first for Spring2020! I have some fennel in my garden, so I placed her there so she would know where to lay her eggs. Here’s hoping she finds a mate this early!

It's time to order milkweed seed! In the Memphis area, you will want to start your tropical milkweed seeds about Jan. 30, so you will have six-week old milkweed plants by the time the Monarchs have left their overwintering grounds in March.

September in Memphis is the slow preparation for winter - in this case, the tiny caterpillar of the Red Spotted Purple (RSP) butterfly creates its perfect hibernation home from a sheared and curled leaf of the host plant. (In this case, black Cherry tree). Its home is called a hibernacula. See the opening in the second pic? The caterpillar is within, and will emerge when the new leaves sprout in the spring. Third pic is the adult RSP.
