The principal at WHS just texted this exciting news. Good morning Tiger Family!
Whitehaven High School, along with the SchooiSeed Foundation, will host a ceremonial
groundbreaking of a new Whitehaven High School STEM building. The event will be held on
Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 12 p.m. on the campus of Whitehaven High School. This 9-
million-dollar STEM facility at Whitehaven High School will provide area students with
enrichment opportunities in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
The facility is being significantly funded by, and will be named for, James Herbert, a 1958
Whitehaven High School graduate who was the founder and former CEO of the Michiganbased
biotech company Neogen Corporation. Sadly, Mr. Herbert died on March 16, 2024, after
a lengthy battle with cancer. He had planned on attending the groundbreaking ceremony.
Whitehaven's 18,500 square-foot, state-of-the-art Herbert STEM Center is expected to be
completed by Spring 2025. This state-of-the-art Herbert STEM Center will be located adjacent
to Whitehaven High School, where the old gymnasium once stood on Whitehaven Lane. The
new building will be devoted to Science Education, and in particular, laboratory work.
If your schedule allows, I would love for you all to attend this historical event. Very limited
space but you are special to this community. A total of $9 million was raised through the
SchooiSeed Foundation, including $2.4 million from Shelby County to support the construction
of this project.
