The Learning Center at Holy Rosary School

A few people have asked me how I felt about remarks made about those with the diagnosis of dyslexia and If I planned on writing anything for social media. While writing anything on social media is not something that I typically do I do have many opinions on things going on in the world today. Being a special educator for many years I am an advocate for everyone should have the same chance” and “a label doesn’t define you”. As you know labels are a double edged sword. We need them to provide services, but now you have a “label”.

It is highly disturbing to have a leader mock someone for any kind of difference, especially so publicly. We know that dyslexia does not define your future, intelligence, or any level of skill. We have seen brilliant people be highly successful. People with dyslexia generally have average to above average IQ. We wouldn’t have many of the conveniences we use in our day-to-day lives if it weren’t for some iconic dyslexic people.

All of you, on your journey for yourselves and/or your child have learned a lot about dyslexia and ADHD, and any other diagnosis our students may have. WE know that the remarks are not true and that those who make such remarks are only showing their own ignorance. Know better. Do better. The remarks made were not only out of line and inappropriate, but they demean and damage up to 20% of our population. The idea that a person with dyslexia is less capable of doing anything is truly astonishing. Our students work hard everyday to be successful and don’t need a “leader” to denigrate all the they do and overcome.

This is all speaking to the choir, but wanted you to know that every day we work with our students to show them their work and their worth.
