Children who read for fun in their early years don't just score better on cognitive tests later. Their brains are physically different.
A 2023 study published in Psychological Medicine, led by researchers at the University of Cambridge, the University of Warwick, and Fudan University in Shanghai, followed 10,243 young adolescents in the US and compared those who had read for fun in early childhood, starting as young as age two, against those who hadn't.
When the researchers looked at brain scans, they found that early readers had measurably larger total brain areas and volumes, including regions tied directly to cognition, attention, and mental health.
The differences didn't stop there. Early readers performed better on tests measuring verbal learning, memory, and speech development. They showed fewer signs of stress and depression. They had better attention, fewer behavioral problems, and longer sleep.
The researchers also found that around 12 hours of reading a week was the sweet spot. Beyond that, benefits plateaued, likely because excessive reading time came at the cost of sport, social activity, and other things that also develop the brain.
What matters most here is that the study isn't describing children who were already smarter or more focused. It's describing children who had access to books and the habit of reading them for fun.

Beverly Cleary was a famous author who struggled to read at school. She was placed in the low reading group and put on academic probation. This humiliating experience gave her the compassion to make sure other struggling learners would have books they could relate to.
It’s truly not fair when kids attend schools which do not identify struggling readers or provide high quality literacy instruction.
Identify. Evaluate. Remediate. Fully educate. Literacy and justice for all.
Any educator can now get FREE training from the Cox Campus to better understand literacy and dyslexia.
Educators with a desire to know better and do better can join The Reading League.
It’s the schools job to teach all children how to read, write, spell and do math.
