Did you know…

An owl pellet is a small, compact mass of indigestible material that an owl regurgitates after eating. When an owl swallows its prey—often whole—it digests the soft tissues like muscles and organs, but cannot break down harder parts such as bones, fur, teeth, and feathers. These leftover materials are compressed in the owl’s gizzard into a pellet, which is later coughed up through the beak.
Owl pellets are especially interesting to scientists and students because they can be taken apart to study what the owl has eaten. By examining the tiny bones and other remains inside a pellet, researchers can learn about the owl’s diet and the local ecosystem.

Stay tuned!! We’re dissecting owl pellets on Wednesday! Don’t be alarmed if your student comes home with a baggie full of “souvenirs”! 😂
