🌟 Melissa ISD Announces Appointment of New Girls Wrestling Coach; Retirement of Longtime Educator and Coach 🌟
After more than three decades in education and 23 years of dedicated service to Melissa ISD, Coach Rick Gagarin is retiring, leaving behind a legacy that has shaped both the classroom and a wide range of athletic and extracurricular programs.
“Teaching and coaching at Melissa the past 23 years has been incredibly fun and exciting,” shared Coach Gagarin. “I loved every minute of it!”
Gagarin began his career in education at Kaufman ISD before moving to McKinney ISD, where he served from 1994 to 2003 as a junior high coordinator and later as a high school assistant football and wrestling coach. In 2003, he joined Melissa ISD, where he would go on to play a foundational role in building programs and developing students for more than two decades.
He first served as Melissa High School’s Athletic Director and Head Football Coach from 2003 to 2007, leading the program during its earliest varsity years. In 2004, Melissa fielded its first varsity football team, made up of only freshmen and sophomores, and finished with a 4-6 record. Just one year later, despite having no senior class, the team earned a 7-3 record and a third-place district finish. In 2006, with its first full graduating class, Melissa advanced to become Area Champions with a 9-4 record, an early milestone in the program’s history, and that was just the beginning.
Throughout the rest of his career here in Melissa ISD, Gagarin continued to contribute to numerous state-level achievements across athletics and academics, including:
🏆 State Engineering 3rd Place (2026)
🏆TGCA Wrestling Coach of the Year (2026)
🏆Girls Wrestling State Runner-Up (2026)
🏆Girls Wrestling Team Duals State Champions (2026)
🏆Robotics UIL State Championship (2025)
🏆Engineering Program State Championships (2020, 2024)
🏆Girls Track State podium finishes (2017, 2021)
🏆Football State Championship Assistant Coach (2011)
🏆Girls Golf State Runner-Up (2010)
🏆Boys Basketball State Semifinalist (2010)
🏆Helped lead 30+ teams to state-level competitions
“Rick Gagarin has been the foundation of our athletic program for more than 20 years. From helping build this school as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach to leading our girls wrestling program, everything Rick does is done with excellence, passion, and purpose,” said Melissa ISD Athletic Director Seth Stinton. “His teams consistently overachieve because his athletes know he believes in them, and they respond to his leadership, work ethic, and commitment to helping young people become their very best. Rick’s impact on our students, programs, and community will be felt for generations.”
Beyond athletics, Gagarin made a significant impact in academics as the Head Robotics Team Coach from 2017 to 2026. He led the program to nine UIL State Tournament appearances, with multiple top finishes including four State Runner-Up titles and a State Championship in the 2025 Robot Tournament. The engineering program also earned State Championships in 2020 and 2024, further reflecting its commitment to student achievement beyond the field of play.
“He has been a cornerstone of the Career and Technology Department at MHS through his leadership in engineering and robotics. His dedication to innovation, student success, and excellence in education has helped shape and grow our programs into some of the most respected and successful in the state,” said MHS Principal Marcus Eckert. “Through countless hours of mentorship and instruction, he has inspired thousands of students to pursue careers in engineering, technology, and problem-solving with confidence and passion. His success is reflected not only in the growth of the department, but also in the numerous UIL awards and competition achievements earned under his leadership.”
Before his career in education, Gagarin served in the U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard from 1988 to 1996. He earned his master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1992.
Melissa ISD would like to thank Coach Gagarin for his years of service and all of the ways he has poured into the lives of our Cardinals. As Coach Gagarin closes this chapter of his career, the impact of his leadership and dedication will continue to be felt across Melissa ISD for years to come. Reflecting on Coach Gagarin’s legacy, Principal Eckert shared, “The influence he has had on MHS, our Career and Technology programs, the athletic department, and the students he has mentored will leave a lasting legacy in Melissa and beyond.”
🌟 Appointment of Coach Oliver Pierce as Girls Wrestling Head Coach
Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, Coach Oliver Pierce will assume the role of Head Coach for both the boys and girls wrestling programs at Melissa High School, continuing the strong foundation built over the years.
Coach Pierce has helped build one of the most successful boys wrestling programs in Texas, leading MHS to a UIL 5A State Championship and producing multiple individual state champions. Under his leadership, the program has consistently competed at the highest level and developed a strong pipeline of state qualifiers and placers. Pierce was recently named the 2026 Texas High School Coaches Association Boys Wrestling Coach of the Year in recognition of his outstanding leadership and team success.
"When I took the boys position in the summer of 2021, I knew that I had an opportunity to organically develop a program here in Melissa. Melissa ISD checked off all of the boxes that are needed to build a sustainable program long term. Our admin allows our coaches to put our kids in a position of success and the results of the program for the last five seasons reflect such,” said Coach Pierce. “As we continue to adapt and evolve as a district, I am excited to mirror that with our girls wrestling program. For the past couple of years, girls wrestling has been statistically the fastest growing sport in the United States. We look forward to growing a program that is representative of the time. We will build off Coach Gagarin's success and help our ladies develop on and off the mat!"
As Melissa ISD looks ahead to the continued growth of its wrestling programs under Coach Pierce’s leadership, the district remains deeply grateful for the foundation Coach Gagarin helped build through more than two decades of dedication, mentorship, and service. Melissa ISD wishes Coach Gagarin the very best in his well-earned retirement and looks forward to the continued success of the wrestling program in the years ahead.
