Five Ways to Develop Your Intuition
By Amy Betts, M.Ed.

In our fast-paced world, intuition is more important than ever. It can tell us when something is right or wrong, often before our logical mind even has a chance to weigh in. Yet our society rarely treats intuition as a skill worth developing — even though it is one. Like any other skill, it can be strengthened and nurtured with practice. Intuition isn't just pseudoscience; it's a different way of knowing, one that works alongside logic rather than against it.

1. Intuition Play
Look for low-stakes places to practice listening to your inner knowing. For example, I live on a dead-end street, and whenever I leave it, I ask myself, "Should I turn right or left?" Both directions lead to the same destination, just by a different route — and more often than not, the route my gut picks helps me avoid a traffic jam. There are plenty of other everyday moments to practice this skill: choosing between chicken or steak for dinner, deciding whether an outfit you're trying on is a hit or a miss, or sensing whether someone you've just met (or started dating) feels trustworthy or like someone to keep your distance from. The point isn't to get every call right — it's to build the habit of checking in with that inner voice before your analytical mind takes over.

2. Notice Your Body
Pay attention to what happens in your body when you're in the middle of making a decision. For me, a wrong choice often shows up as a sinking feeling in my gut. For you, it might be tension in your shoulders, a tightness in your chest, or a sense of ease and lightness when something feels right. Learning to recognize your own body's signals is one of the fastest ways to access intuition, since these physical cues often arrive before you've consciously reasoned anything out.

3. Meditation
Slowing down through meditation helps you become more present and attuned — both in everyday situations and in how you relate to other people. It quiets the mental noise that usually drowns out subtler signals. While meditating, you may notice a feeling or impression about someone or something you've been wrestling with. That feeling is your intuition at work, and meditation simply gives it the space to surface.

4. Ask Your Higher Self
Like meditation, this practice is based on the idea that your higher self already knows the answer — and that it tends to weave logic into its guidance rather than ignore it. For a decision like whether to buy a piece of property, all it takes is a quiet moment: get silent, ask yourself the question directly (writing it down can help), and notice what comes up. The answer may arrive as a word, a feeling, or simply a quiet sense of clarity.

5. Guided Meditation
Many guided meditations are designed specifically to help you connect with your intuition. Look for a reputable teacher and explore what they offer online. Whichever one you choose, the goal should always be to help you arrive at your own answer — through your higher self, your gut, or even your spirit guides, if that's part of your belief system — rather than steering you toward what the meditation teacher thinks you should do.

Blessed to have incredible women in my life. And of course breathtaking sunsets. 🌅

Jesus embraced the power of women and shared the message that women deserve equal treatment and, depending on how you read history, they played a vital role in spreading his message and were his trusted advisors.
