Walking While Black: Film & Community Discussion

Join Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone for a viewing of the 90-minute documentary Walking While Black: L.O.V.E. is the Answer and a community discussion on Thursday, September 17 at 6pm. This free event is available both virtually and in-person. The in-person event will take place in the Robert H. Jackson Center’s Banquet Room and is capped at 50 people.Walking While Black: L.O.V.E. is the Answer was produced by A.J. Ali. Ali is also the person behind the National Day of Reconciliation on September 17, a day of communication and healing between police and people of color in the United States.

Meet Jacqueline Jones-Peace, Senior Attorney, Director of Development at the Equal Justice Initiative (). She also served on the faculty at New York University School of Law as Co-Associate Director of the Lawyering Program. Prior to that, she was a Litigation Associate at Cleary Gottlieb in New York for several years after clerking for U.S. District Judge John S. Martin in the Southern District of New York. Civil rights leader and attorney Barbara Jordan was a political trailblazer. In 1966, she became the first African-American elected to the Texas Senate, and then just a few years later, she became the first woman and first African-American elected to Congress from Texas. In 1992, the NAACP awarded Jordan the Spingarn Medal, and in 1994, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Bill Clinton. Let’s start with a bit of history! ⚖️ Thurgood Marshall was the first black man to be appointed to the Supreme Court by President Johnson in 1967.

Immediately after graduating from Howard University Law School 🏛 in the 1930’s, Marshall opened a law firm in Baltimore where he represented the local NAACP chapter in a successful lawsuit that challenged the University of Maryland Law School over its segregation policy. In 1940, after becoming chief legal counsel for the NAACP and establishing the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Marshall became a key strategist in the effort to end segregation. He challenged Plessy vs. Ferguson (separate but equal) and won a series of court decisions that gradually struck down that doctrine, ultimately leading to Brown v. Board of Education, which he argued before the Supreme Court in 1952 and 1953, finally overturning “separate but equal” and acknowledging that segregation greatly diminished students’ self-esteem.

As a Supreme Court Justice, he became increasingly dismayed and disappointed as the court’s majority retreated from remedies he felt were necessary to address remnants of Jim Crow. In his Bakke dissent (landmark case that upheld affirmative action, allowing race to be one of several factors in college admission policy), he wrote: “In light of the sorry history of discrimination and its devastating impact on the lives of Negroes, bringing the Negro into the mainstream of American life should be a state interest of the highest order. To fail to do so is to insure that America will forever remain a divided society.”
