We’ve been doing a lot of bird watching lately at Maple Grove. The learners have been putting out bird seed to lure the birds in and then they carefully and quietly approach the bird to see how close they can get. A small flock of Golden Crowned sparrows are becoming quite comfortable with the kids and are allowing us to get closer and closer.

It’s been such a joy to watch their excitement about birds blossom and grow. We would be thrilled to receive kids binoculars so the learners could expand their awareness of birds. It’s easy to see how play in nature supports children’s physical development (building strong, healthy bodies) and their cognitive development (the ability to think, experiment, and figure things out). But research shows that outdoor play and education also enhances all aspects of social and emotional development, too!
When they play together in nature, kids with different cultures, different home lives, different learning styles, and different belief systems all come together and face challenges together.

Kids learn to collaborate, to include one another, listen to each other, to speak up for each other, and to co-create as part of a community.

What’s the end result? Kids who are more confident, competent and kind. Read more in our blog.
