🎺 **REPAIR SPOTLIGHT: Why Regular Maintenance Matters**

These two photos tell the story.

This baritone was **still playable** when it came into Chris K Music—but look at the buildup inside the tubing. 😳

Over time, moisture, residue, minerals, and old lubricant can accumulate inside an instrument. If left untreated, that buildup can contribute to:

🔧 Sticking or sluggish valves
🔧 Slides becoming difficult to move
🔧 Corrosion and mineral buildup
🔧 Premature valve and slide wear
🔧 Poorer response and airflow
🔧 More expensive repairs later

And the **after photo**? Same part after cleaning and servicing.

Regular maintenance isn't just about making an instrument look nice. It's about **preventing problems before they become repairs and keeping the instrument playing its best.**

Student instruments especially take a beating throughout the school year. If it's been a while since yours has had a professional cleaning and inspection, now is a great time.

🎺 **MUSIC SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: Instrument Repair & Maintenance** 🔧🎷

A big **THANK YOU** to everyone who has trusted Chris K Music with your instruments over the past couple of weeks! I’ve had a steady stream of instruments coming through for repairs, cleanings, adjustments, and troubleshooting, and I truly appreciate your support.

Sometimes an instrument needs a repair. Sometimes it needs a good cleaning or adjustment. And sometimes the instrument isn’t the problem at all! My goal is to find the **actual cause of the problem** and help get you or your student back to making music.

🎵 **I don't just teach students WHAT to practice — I teach them HOW to practice.**

I often compare a good practice session to going to the gym. You don't walk in, immediately grab the heaviest weights, do one exercise for an hour, and leave. You warm up, work different muscle groups, do your reps, and gradually challenge yourself.

Music practice can work the same way.

🎵 **1. Warm Up — Technique**
Depending on the instrument, this might be five-note scales, full scales, buzzing, finger exercises, rudiments, or even a very easy piece that lets us focus on producing everything correctly.

🎵 **2. Warm Up — Music**
Next, play something you've already learned and are comfortable with. This helps connect the technique from your warm-up with actual music while reinforcing muscle and musical memory.

🎵 **3. Review — Do the Reps**
Now work on music you understand but that doesn't quite feel comfortable yet. Maybe it's a few notes, a measure, a transition, tempo, rhythm, or technique.

You know HOW to do it. Now your hands, ears, and brain need the repetitions to make it feel natural.

🎵 **4. Something New**
Finally, when you're ready, challenge yourself with something new — a new song, exercise, technique, rhythm, or concept.

**Warm up. Play what you know. Work what needs attention. Then build something new.**

That's one of the things I want my students to learn at Chris K Music: becoming a better musician isn't only about practicing more.

**It's learning how to practice better.**

🎺 **TRUMPET SERVICE — More Than Just a Cleaning!**

Take a look at this before & after! 👀

This trumpet came in with **stuck tuning slides and valves that weren't moving as smoothly as they should**. Once I started taking things apart, it became pretty clear why.

There was significant buildup and corrosion on the tuning slides, inside the tubing, and around the valve pistons.

At Chris K Music, instrument service isn't simply about giving an instrument a bath and making the outside look shiny. **I get down to the problem at hand.**

✅ Stuck tuning slides removed and serviced
✅ Buildup and corrosion cleaned
✅ Valve pistons cleaned and serviced
✅ Interior tubing cleaned
✅ Slides properly lubricated
✅ Instrument checked for proper function

Illinois Marching Band Directors & Event Hosts — 2026 Adjudicator Availability

CK Marching Services has availability for select marching band contests, festivals, and other adjudicated events throughout Illinois.

With more than 25 years in the marching arts, I have experience adjudicating Music, Visual, Percussion, Drum Major, and General Effect, including both individual and ensemble captions.

My adjudication philosophy is simple: evaluate the program and performance that is actually in front of me.

Every band has different students, resources, goals, traditions, and design approaches. My role as an adjudicator isn't to redesign a director's show or tell a program what style it should be. It's to evaluate how successfully the performers communicate and achieve the musical, visual, and effect responsibilities of the production they've chosen.

A rock show can be a great rock show. A Latin production doesn't need an elaborate storyline to be successful. Sections don't need to be integrated simply because that's currently popular. If the design makes sense, the performers communicate it, and the musical and visual achievement is there, that deserves to be recognized.

I also approach every recording knowing that students are listening too. Feedback should identify achievement, explain opportunities for growth, and give performers and directors useful information they can apply at their next rehearsal.

My goal is for directors to finish listening to my commentary feeling that their students were fairly evaluated, respected, and given useful educational feedback—regardless of program size, competitive class, show style, or philosophy.

I especially like this positioning for you because it distinguishes you without saying “other judges have agendas” or “judges are pushing their brands.” A contest host reading it can infer the difference.

One other phrase you could eventually make part of your adjudication branding is:

“Evaluate. Educate. Respect the Intent.”

That's short enough for graphics, your website's adjudication page, emails to contest hosts, and even the header of an adjudicator bio.
