"An opossum eats 5,000 ticks a season." It's one of the most shared wildlife facts online, and it isn't true.

Here's where it came from. Years ago, caged opossums in a lab were given ticks and watched while they groomed, and someone worked out a rough estimate of what one might kill in a season. The internet turned that into a weekly figure and ran with it.

Then wild opossums were checked. Stomach contents, decades of diet records. No ticks. Not one.

🐾 What opossums actually do:

- Clean up dead animals, fallen fruit, slugs, snails, beetles, and mice
- Raid the trash now and then, yes
- Run a body temperature cool enough that the illnesses people worry about rarely take hold in them

They don't need a myth to be worth keeping around.

Did you know Marshall now has a seed library? Or even what a seed library is?

Well, a seed library is a free seed exchange. You can pick up free seeds and donate extra seeds.... either leftovers or seeds you harvest from your flowers and gardens in the fall. The Marshall seed library is located at the Marshall - Lyon County Library. It is a joint venture between the library and the U of MN Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Lyon County. It is open for seed "taking" in the spring and summer. In the fall, we need to collect harvested seeds, cold stratify them if needed, and get them ready for next spring.

If you would like more information, or have plants that you could harvest seeds from, let us know. Our Master Gardener Program "Everything Seeds" on Thursday Oct 8 will cover all you need to know. It starts at 6:30 PM at the Marshall Lyon County Library. If you can't make it and would like to donate seeds, email us at [email protected].
