My 2 + 3 year old students are capable artists! One student even has a shirt to prove it, swipe to see 👀 Even the smallest hands can create independently, when we as teachers and parents provide with them opportunities to explore art materials in developmentally appropriate ways! Process over product = proud and happy little artists. 🤗🎨💖

I received this yesterday from one of the schools I teach at, and it made my day! I truly LOVE what I do, love my students at every school I teach at, and strive to give my students the best art class experience possible. It’s so wonderful and affirming to know the students can feel that. Thank you to the folks at Aspira Virtual Academy for putting this together. 🥰🎨💖

🎨 Alma Thomas Paintings 🎨

Alma Thomas is kind of a big deal! She is such an inspiring and fascinating artist. One of the many amazing things about her is that she worked as an art teacher for most of her adult life, she didn’t begin her fine art career until she was in her 70s! In her retirement she returned to focusing on her own art work and her career as an artist took off!

🎨 In 1973, Thomas became the first Black woman to have a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

🎨 In 2015, her painting “Resurrection” was hung in the White House, making her the first Black woman to have a painting in the White House Collection.

🎨 She broke down barriers and helped pave the way for other Black women artists

Lesson deets- We read “Ablaze with Color: A Story of Painter Alma Thomas” and learned about the life and art of Alma Thomas. Students used paint sticks to make concentric circles and color them in. Next, acrylic paint was used to make dashes on top in the signature style of Thomas. 🎨

✨🎨🦋 SPRING POP-UP CLASS 🦋🎨✨ It’s rare that I get a chance to take photos at my school pop-up classes, because we are just so busy. The students were so engaged in this project that it actually gave me a moment to get some photos. That is the magic of painting- it often leads to a flow state even with very young students!

🌈🐛 RAINBOW VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLARS 🐛 🌈

Created by my 4-6 year old class after reading Eric Carle’s classic, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Using model magic, students created their caterpillars using any colors they wished to. Google eyes, pipe cleaner atennas and markers were used for the details. During class 2 they created a “nice green leaf” for their caterpillar by mixing yellow and green model magic together.

Fun fact- I encouraged the students to name their caterpillars. Many were named after Gabby’s Dollhouse characters, such as Cakey and Carlita and one is named Spider-Man. 😜
