This ca. 1875 soap label has been awaiting processing in our backlog. When we queued it up for cataloging back in January, we had no idea that looking at the photo now in May would be so poignant. Welcome, Soap. Heck yes. And, may I shake your hand? Goodness, how the world has changed.
Our notes from January had a rather different focus: Label issued for Curtis & Davis, Boston. Established 1834, manufacturer of Welcome Soap for laundry and kitchen use. Around 1900 the firm litigated to defend their name and handshake logo against imitators in a case which remains foundational to trademark law in the US today.
