Seven years before everything fell apart, Xander walked into the Slow Drip on a Saturday night, and a woman with sea-glass eyes told him the octopus had gotten into the filtration system. He fell the way you fall when you never see the ground coming.
He remembers it in fragments now. Coffee and smoke and patchouli, and underneath it an older scent, wood and time and secrets. The café had a way of dissolving your reluctance, until you could not find the seam where wanting began.
Chapter Three of Lost Grounds. Thursday, 9 AM ET. Free to read.
