Our Story

The goal in Dr. Michael H Popkin founding Active Parenting Publishers(APP) was to apply state-of-the-art educational technology to the field of parenting education. The APP model is largely based upon the theories of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs as it relates to an “authoritative approach” to parenting as opposed to an “autocratic or permissive” approach. Parents today are more isolated than ever — and it shows up directly in your sessions. 🏘️

When parents don't have a support network, they burn out faster, miss sessions, and struggle to keep the skills you're teaching going at home.

But here's what most leaders don't realize: your group can be the start of their village.

Try one of these three ideas at your next session and watch what shifts. 💙

Here's something small that makes a big difference.

When a young child is overwhelmed — before you step in to correct them, try naming the feeling first.

"𝙔𝙤𝙪'𝙧𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙛𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙣𝙤𝙬, 𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣'𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪?"

That one sentence tells a child they're seen. And when kids feel seen, they calm down faster and become far more open to guidance.

Connect before you correct. It's one of the core tools in Active Parenting: First Five Years — and it works.

If you lead parent groups, Head Start classes, or early childhood programs, this evidence-based curriculum provides everything you need to help families build a strong foundation right from the start.

Foster parents don't just open their homes. They open their lives. 💚

Every day, foster and kinship caregivers show up for children navigating trauma, loss, and uncertainty — often without enough support, training, or recognition to sustain them.

That's the gap parent educators are uniquely positioned to fill.

This National Foster Care Month we published a new blog that breaks down how to use the Protective Factors Framework and our evidence-backed tools to help foster families build resilience, connection, and the confidence to keep going.

This is why we do this work. 💙

Christopher Padilla, an Active Parenting Leader, shared one of the most rewarding moments he's witnessed in his work.

A father in his class had been estranged from his daughter—until he began applying the skills from the coparenting class to bridge the gap.💔
Step by step, he started showing up differently.

He took it seriously.
He did the work.
And recently? She let him back in. 🧡

That kind of shift doesn't just change one family — Christopher says it moved the whole room. 🙌

This is what happens when a parent decides to do things differently. And this is what Leaders get to facilitate and witness.

Here's something worth sitting with this Mental Health Awareness Month.

Your kids aren't learning resilience from a lesson or a book. They're learning it from you — on the hard days, in the quiet moments, every time you choose to keep going.

When you take a breath before reacting, they notice. When you reach out for support instead of pushing through alone, they notice. When you start over the next day without giving up, they notice.

Parental resilience doesn't just protect your mental health. It becomes the blueprint your kids carry for the rest of their lives.

Save this and share it with a parent who needs the reminder today. 💜

Separation and divorce don't have to mean conflict. 💙

For parents navigating co-parenting after separation, the path forward isn't easy — but it doesn't have to be a battle either. The Crossroads of Coparenting program gives families a roadmap for making decisions together, even when being together is no longer the plan.

If you work with families going through separation, divorce, or custody transitions — this training was made for you.
