Another sneak peek!! This is the updated and improved Safe Space.

We're big fans of Conscious Discipline and we believe all behavior is communication. We don't expect our students to "use their words" or "calm down" when they don't have the tools needed.

We give them the tools, time and space to work through big feelings, resolve disputes peacefully with peers and take time to themselves as needed when things feel overwhelming.

Sneak peek at the classroom update! So excited to be able to have options for gross motor indoors when we can't be outside in the summer. Stay tuned! It's almost ready for the big reveal!

Miss 5 was reading page numbers up in the 600s and I got curious. This is assessment in a child-led classroom.

I invited her to play a place value game and brother wanted to join too. We learned the rules together and played a round.

I quickly realized the game was too easy for both of them (it's a 1st-2nd grade game) and I added a writing element to provide a bit of a challenge.

They played 3 rounds on their own while I observed.

✅ Ten frames
✅ Base 10 blocks
✅ Expanded form
✅ Written form

✅ Assessment and observation without testing.

We introduced a new invitation this week- Montessori-inspired push pinning. Admittedly, I was nervous, as I didn't start off with a very easy shape.

In this activity, the children use a push pin to poke holes into the paper with a protective foam backing underneath. The goal is to get around the entire shape, essentially creating enough perforations to separate the shape from the remaining paper.

Not only is this a fine-motor powerhouse of an activity, but it's also a test of patience, perseverance, risk-assessment and frustration-tolerance.

All the students completed the activity successfully, though one did exhibit some impatience/frustration, resulting in a switch to a larger punch tool.

We will be adding this to our regular fine motor area with a variety of shapes and various tool options to continue honing our pre-writing skills .
