New week, new invitations.

- Our number train is making a new appearance, inviting friends to build numbers in groups of 10

- We quickly got over our study of weather when our weather got boring and we're moving on to rocks!

- Sometimes things we ignore in one setting, we find interesting in others. Let's try K'Nex in the sensory table.

I began the day with zero inspiration for invitations. All I had was "we need more fine motor and we need to think outside the box".

I took a little trip to the Dollar Tree and ended up with what you see here.

I can't wait to see what my little geniuses come up with using my mixed and matched materials!

"Just playing" may be my most despised phrase of unknowing adults. We've been so conditioned to recognize learning as worksheets, flash cards, and tests, we've forgotten that true learning is actually rooted in the understanding of fundamental concepts and relationships.

I sit quietly as these scenarios unfold. I watch, I listen, I document. I notice which children have experience with certain concepts and which are learning for the first time. I hear conversations and connections being made. They correct each other when they recognize errors in their thinking. A gorilla placed in the desert is moved to the jungle. A hippo can't be put in the ocean because it likes fresh water. It's water, but not the same water.

This child-directed activity could have been an adult-led unit about animals or habitats, but would it have been meaningful? Relevant? Interesting? Probably not.

Real learning is intrinsic.

A child’s name is one of the first words they learn to recognize and write, and it’s also one of the best opportunities to teach how letters actually work.

When we teach children to write their names as **ALL CAPITAL LETTERS**, we’re skipping an important piece of early literacy: understanding that letters have different forms, sizes, and purposes. We want children to see and practice names the way they appear in everyday writing.

Today’s work: Fairy Tale STEM Problem Solving Kits from

In child-led, play-based learning, there can't be a "right" way to do something. Today's activities are a perfect example of that concept. Each kit gave the kids a fairy tale problem to solve, some materials to work with, and then… they were on their own!

There was planning, building, testing, changing plans, trying again, and lots of “WAIT—I have an idea!” happening around the room. For real, I was completely obsolete for most of the day! 😂

They were so focused that you’d never know how much learning was packed into it...engineering, problem solving, creativity, persistence, teamwork, and a whole lot of figuring things out as they went.

I'm happy to report, our 3 bears had sturdy chairs, our 3 billy goats had a troll-resistant bridge and our 3 pigs had adequate wolf-proof housing by the end of the day!

We got this fraction set yesterday and I decided to put it out and see what would happen. It started with the big question, “What is this for?”

One of my standard replies followed, “Exploring. See what you can discover.”

So he started playing around with it, and pretty quickly his exploring turned into an impromptu lesson on equivalent fractions. We grabbed a whiteboard, started writing down what he was building, and kept going from there.

No lesson planned. No worksheet. He was curious about something, we followed that curiosity, and some pretty great math happened along the way.

Let's talk portfolios!!! Without testing, how do we know children are learning?

First, children are ALWAYS learning, that's what we are designed to do as humans. But if that's not explanation enough...portfolios!

Each student has 2 portfolios. 1 digital, 1 physical.

Digital. This is an online photo album accessible only to that child's grown-ups. It contains photos of daily work, progress, friendships, etc. I comment about what they had a lesson on, what they worked on or something extraordinary that may have happened that day. It's a concise daily report.

Physical. This is a small book, as pictured, that I add to at least once a week. It contains writing samples, photos too awesome not to print and anecdotes or quotes that the grown-ups shouldn't miss out on. Think of it like a diary, but written by the guide.

Is this a lot of time and work? Yes! And I wouldn't have it any other way. Tests can show what a child can regurgitate on paper but they'll never show who that child is as a person.

In just 4 short days, I've already learned so much about these small humans. I know what they like and dislike, how they learn best, their favorite place in our learning environment, their frustration tolerance, and so many things their grown-ups probably didn't want to be public knowledge! 😂
