๐ŸŒŸ These 13 Marengo FFA members are ready for an awesome 11 days at the Iowa State Fair serving in the Grandstand Usher / Free Stage Program!

๐ŸŒŸ Sherra Bonnichsen is serving as a ULT (Usher Leadership Team) this year! In this role, Sherra will help lead and support the Grandstand Ushers, making sure everyone is organized, prepared, and ready for each eveningโ€™s grandstand show, along with helping with additional fair duties throughout the day.

๐Ÿ“ฃ What is this program?
For more than 70 years, FFA members from across Iowa have had the opportunity to experience the Iowa State Fair while serving as Free Stage Attendants or Grandstand Ushers. FFA members are selected through an application process each June and move into the fairgrounds before the fair begins.

Free Stage Attendants spend their time helping set up and tear down acts on the five free stages. They work closely with performers and stage crews to prepare for all types of shows and performances.

Grandstand Ushers help distribute fair programs during the day and assist with seating thousands of guests each evening. They help create a welcoming experience for fairgoers from the moment they arrive at the Grandstand.

Attendants and Ushers also help with other Iowa State Fair and Iowa FFA activities, including FFA shows, exhibits, contests, and special events.

This Spring, our Ag 1 students learned firsthand about poultry production by raising Buff Orpington pullets from just a few days old. Throughout the project, students explored chicken behavior, nutrition, growth, biosecurity, and daily flock management while collecting data and tracking their birds' progress.

A favorite tradition continued this year as our freshmen partnered with our first grade classrooms through the Marengo FFA Buddies Program. The high school students taught lessons on the life cycle of a chicken, egg development, candling, poultry breeds, and daily chicken care. This hands-on experience helps younger students discover agriculture while giving our freshmen the opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills.

This year, 15 Ag 1 students chose to take their Buff Orpington pullets home to continue raising them beyond the classroom, extending their learning through a real-world supervised agriculture experience.

This coop will allow our pullet project to come full circle by giving future students the opportunity to continue caring for their birds as they mature into laying hens.

Beginning this fall, students will experience farm-to-table learning through egg production. This exciting addition will provide an authentic, year-round agricultural education experience while connecting classroom concepts to everyday life.

The Kinze Award Contest recognizes FFA and 4-H exhibitors for engineering excellence and craftsmanship demonstrated through welding and mechanical project work. Entries are evaluated by Iowa State University Extension staff and include interviews with the Kinze team before awards are presented.
