Third-man runs from deep are hard to defend because they exploit blindside movement and timing that defensive lines struggle to track. The first receiver attracts immediate pressure, the second player provides a layoff or pass option, and the third player arrives from a deeper position with momentum, often unmarked. Defenders are naturally focused on the ball and their direct opponent, so the runner from deep benefits from delayed recognition, arriving into advanced spaces with a dynamic advantage. This combination of disguise, timing, and overload makes it extremely difficult for defensive structures to maintain compactness while also preventing pe*******on.

Leverkusen’s attacking strategy is meticulously balanced, with 33% of their attacks coming down the left, 34% through the center, and 33% down the right. This even distribution prevents the opposition from focusing on a single attacking zone, as threats can emerge from anywhere. The flexibility allows Leverkusen to adapt during matches, maintaining unpredictability, and avoiding over-reliance on any one player or flank. This versatility puts immense pressure on the defensive structure of opponents, making it difficult to close down the attack without leaving gaps elsewhere.

The primary strategy involves overloading the central areas to progress through vertical passing and intricate combinations. By pushing their center-backs high up the pitch, Leverkusen creates numerical superiority in the middle, allowing midfielders like Granit Xhaka and Florian Wirtz to dictate play. The wing-backs, Grimaldo and Frimpong, stay wide to stretch the opposition and create isolation situations on the flanks. This overload in the center often forces the opposition to collapse inward, which then opens space on the wings.
