Transportation History Spotlight – November 13

🛣️ 1927 – The Holland Tunnel Opens
At exactly 12:01 a.m., the Holland Tunnel officially opened beneath the Hudson River, linking Manhattan, NY and Jersey City, NJ. As the first twin-tube underwater vehicular tunnel in the United States, it revolutionized cross-river transportation and became a global model for tunnel ventilation and safety design.

🚗 1973 – AASHO Becomes AASHTO
On this day, the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO) officially rebranded as the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) — expanding its focus beyond highways to embrace a multi-modal mission supporting all facets of transportation.

From pioneering infrastructure to progressive leadership, November 13 marks two defining moments that continue to shape how America moves.

🚧 Transportation History Spotlight – November 11, 1914

On this day in 1914, state highway officials gathered in Atlanta for what became known as the “Good Roads” Conference — a pivotal moment that led to the formation of the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO), now known as AASHTO.

This meeting set the stage for the creation of national standards in highway design, construction, and safety, establishing the framework that continues to guide modern infrastructure development across the United States.

More than a century later, AASHTO remains a cornerstone in advancing innovation, safety, and consistency across our nation’s transportation network.
