It’s not always pretty..

Sometimes we have to just do the best that we can with what we’ve got. Traveling full-time while teaching sure has its challenges.

It’s not the first time I’ve had to deal with less than ideal teaching circumstances BUT I do have a secret. When I’m in these types of situations I give my students 1000% energy. My happy food distracts from the noise, the people and everything.

How do I get in this mood you may ask? Well nothing a little Myles Smith UK and a huge, HUGE cup of coffee can’t fix!

Ever heard of Carol Dweck?

She’s the psychologist who changed how the world thinks about intelligence. Her research showed that students don’t fail because they’re “not smart enough”. They fail because they believe they can’t improve.

She introduced the idea of the growth mindset. The belief that ability is built, not fixed.

Here’s the interesting part.

In classrooms that applied her work, students who were struggling actually started outperforming others. Not because they suddenly got smarter. Because they stopped avoiding challenges and started leaning into them.

Now think about online teaching.

Most students log in already carrying doubt. Language anxiety. Fear of mistakes. Low confidence.

If you treat ability as fixed, you reinforce that fear.
If you teach with a growth mindset, you change the game.

Simple shifts:
- Praise effort, not just correct answers
- Normalize mistakes as part of learning
- Challenge students just beyond their comfort zone

You’re not just teaching English.
You’re shaping how your students see their own potential.

And that sticks far longer than any vocabulary list.
