¡Hola! On Wednesdays, we have our workshop in the elementary school. We work with third graders learning how to construct and care for a worm composter, and we work with fourth graders in the cultivation of a medicinal garden. The students are so fun to work with and they are so smart. I have learned so much from working with them. At first, it was so challenging to feel comfortable speaking with them and leading classes in Spanish, but after a session or two, it got much easier.
On Thursdays, we work with middle schoolers on the same projects. With sixth and eighth graders we are creating the medicinal garden and with seventh graders we are developing the worm composter. Doing the same projects in both schools has been so rewarding because observing the differences in their cognition is fascinating.
On Fridays, I work with my team on campus to create reviews of the week’s sessions and finalize the plans for the next week. We are working to create a digital resource bank to be able to share didactic materials with teachers around the country!
As I get to the end of my internship here, I am reflecting on how grateful I am to have been given this opportunity and I extend my gratitude to the K-State departments and colleges that have made this possible: Department of Modern Languages, Department of Agronomy, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Agriculture.
See you soon, MHK!

Hello again! On Mondays and Tuesdays, we have meetings where we prepare for the week ahead. In each of the two schools I work in, a team of university students accompanies us to carry out the activities with the students. I work alongside a colleague from Mexico to organize school visits, meetings with leaders, and more. These meetings are fully carried out in Spanish, so arriving to Mexico with a high level of Spanish fluency was crucial. However, my team is so understanding and gives me so much patience when I struggle to find the right words!
It is the responsibility of the mentors (me and my colleagues) to prepare the workshops, but the university students direct the workshops in the schools!
Although I am not in Mexico studying, I was given the opportunity to join in on one of the classes in the department of soil science. As an agronomy major, that was an obvious yes. I joined in on soil cartography which meets on Mondays and Tuesdays. I even got the chance to join them on their field day to describe a soil profile!
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, we have our sessions in the schools, stay tuned!

Hola K-State Modern Languages! My name is Annie Moss, and I am a senior majoring in Agronomy and Spanish. This spring, I took a semester off from school to spend the semester as an intern in Central Mexico! I’ll be taking over the account a little bit to show you guys a look into what I’ve been up to since I’ve been away.
My program works alongside one of Latin America’s most prestigious agricultural universities, la Universidad Autónoma Chapingo, to implement agricultural/environmental programs in local elementary and middle schools. Since being here, I have had the chance to explore so much of the area. The rich culture of the indigenous people who inhabit the region has been incredible to learn about. I like to spend my Saturdays exploring and experiencing new things, and my Sundays resetting for the week ahead and doing chores such as going to the market! Simple daily interactions like ordering at a coffee shop and buying groceries from the market have improved my Spanish speaking skills so much!
Not only am I gaining experience, but I am also receiving college credit through the Department of Modern Languages’ Internship course!
As we get into the week, I'll give you guys a look into what I do for work, because I promise it's not all tourism!
