🎭 Director’s Tip #7: Make Bold Choices

One of the biggest mistakes actors make in auditions is playing it safe.

As directors, we’re looking for performers who commit to their character. We’d much rather see a strong, confident choice than a performance that feels hesitant or generic. Even if your interpretation isn’t exactly what we imagined, showing confidence and commitment tells us you have the courage to bring a role to life.

Don’t be afraid to:
✨ Have a clear point of view.
✨ Make purposeful acting choices.
✨ Tell the story with confidence.
✨ Trust your preparation.

Remember, you can always adjust your performance if a director gives you a note. It’s much easier to guide an actor who has made a bold choice than one who hasn’t made any choice at all.

🎭 For The Wizard of Oz, this is especially important. Every character—from Dorothy to the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, witches, and even the ensemble—has a unique personality. Show us who your character is, not just the lines or the song.

👑For Six Teen Edition, please refer back to our queen introductions to help with your auditions.

Be prepared. Be confident. Be memorable.

🎭 Director’s Tip #6: Avoid These Common Audition Mistakes

Every audition season, we see a few mistakes that are completely avoidable. The good news? Once you’re aware of them, they’re easy to fix!

❌ Don’t apologize before or after your audition.
Saying things like, “I’m sick,” “I didn’t practice enough,” or “Sorry, I’m terrible” doesn’t help your audition. Walk in confidently and let your performance speak for itself.

❌ Don’t let one mistake derail you.
Missed a note? Forgot a word? Took a wrong step? Keep going! Live theater is all about recovering gracefully.

❌ Don’t watch the floor.
Keep your head up, make eye contact, and connect with the story you’re telling.

❌ Don’t hold back.
This is your chance to show us what you’re capable of. Commit to your character and make bold choices.

❌ Don’t compare yourself to everyone else.
Someone else’s audition has nothing to do with yours. Every performer brings something unique, and every role requires different qualities.

✅ Instead…
• Come prepared.
• Be respectful.
• Stay positive.
• Take direction.
• Have fun.
• Leave the audition knowing you gave it your best.

Remember, we’re not looking for perfection—we’re looking for students who are prepared, teachable, and excited to tell a story.

🌈 The only audition you can control is your own. Focus on your performance, not everyone else’s. We can’t wait to see what you bring to the world of Oz and Six Teen Edition! 👑

👑 Final Queen Spotlight – Are You Ready to Reign? 👑

Over the past several weeks, we’ve introduced each of the six queens from SIX: Teen Edition and shared what we’re looking for in each role. Now it’s time for one final reminder before audition materials are released!

🎤 Audition materials will be available in early September.
📅 Auditions will be held on Wednesday, October 28.

One of the most important things to understand about this show is the music.

The six queens don’t just sing incredible solos—they spend nearly the entire 90-minute show singing tight 3- and 4-part harmonies. Unlike many musicals, there are moments when you may be the only person singing your harmony line. There isn’t always someone else on your note to follow.

Because of that, we are looking for performers who can:
👑 Confidently hold their own harmony part
👑 Maintain pitch and blend with the group
👑 Learn and perform complex vocal arrangements independently
👑 Deliver high-energy performances while singing challenging harmonies

This vocal skill is essential for anyone hoping to be cast as one of the queens. Strong solo singing is important—but so is being an outstanding ensemble vocalist.

If you’re willing to put in the work, bring incredible energy, and challenge yourself vocally, we can’t wait to see you at auditions!

🎭 Director’s Tip #5: Take Direction Like a Pro

One of the most important things we look for in an audition isn’t just what you prepared—it’s how you respond when we ask you to try something new.

Don’t be surprised if we say:
🎬 “Can you do that again, but with more excitement?”
🎬 “This time, imagine you’re talking to your best friend.”
🎬 “Try it a little bigger.”
🎬 “Now play it more seriously.”

Here’s the secret…

When a director gives you a new direction, it’s a good thing! It means we’re exploring your potential and seeing how flexible you are as a performer.

We’re looking for students who:
✨ Listen carefully.
✨ Make an adjustment without arguing or apologizing.
✨ Aren’t afraid to try something different.
✨ Embrace the challenge with a positive attitude.

The ability to take direction is one of the most valuable skills you can have in theatre. During rehearsals, you’ll receive notes every day. The cast members who grow the most are the ones who are open to learning and willing to make changes.

Remember, we’re not expecting perfection. We’re looking for performers who are teachable, adaptable, and excited to grow.

🌈 The best auditioners don’t just show us what they can do—they show us what they can become.

🎭 Director’s Tip #4: Confidence Is Contagious

You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room to stand out—but you do need to believe in the character you’re playing.

When you walk into an audition:
⭐ Stand tall.
⭐ Make eye contact.
⭐ Take a deep breath.
⭐ Walk on stage like you belong there.

Confidence doesn’t mean you aren’t nervous. It means you don’t let your nerves stop you from giving your best performance.

One of the biggest mistakes performers make is playing it too safe because they’re afraid of making a mistake.

Take the risk.

Make a strong choice with your character. Commit to it from beginning to end. We’d much rather see a performer who fully commits than one who holds back wondering, “What if?”

For The Wizard of Oz, every character has a distinct personality. Dorothy is hopeful. The Scarecrow is curious. The Tin Man is heartfelt. The Cowardly Lion is larger than life. Even the smallest roles help create the magic of Oz.

Show us your interpretation. Make us believe you’re already in the world of Oz.

🌪️ Remember: The most memorable auditions aren’t always the most technically perfect—they’re the ones where the performer commits completely and tells the story with confidence.

We’ll be cheering for every student who walks through the audition room doors. Give it your all, have fun, and let your personality shine!

👑 Queen Spotlight: Catherine Parr 👑

The Survivor. The Scholar. The Leader.

Catherine Parr is the final queen—and the one who helps rewrite the ending. Intelligent, compassionate, and quietly powerful, she refuses to let her story be defined by Henry VIII. Instead, she inspires the queens to reclaim their own voices.

🎵 Featured Song: I Don’t Need Your Love

Think: Alicia Keys • Emeli Sandé • Powerful pop ballads with soul and emotion.

🎭 What We’re Looking For:

✨ A mature, confident storyteller
✨ Strong vocal control with warmth and emotion
✨ Authentic connection to the lyrics—not just big notes
✨ Natural leadership and stage presence
✨ The ability to inspire the other queens while remaining grounded and genuine

Catherine Parr isn’t the loudest queen—but when she sings, everyone listens. Her performance builds from heartfelt vulnerability to empowering strength, making emotional honesty just as important as vocal ability.

💙 Director’s Tip: Don’t rely on vocal power alone. Show us the journey. Let us see Catherine grow from someone telling her story to someone leading all six queens toward a new ending. The audience should believe every word you sing.

👑 Which queen speaks to you most? Audition for the one that lets your personality and talent shine. We can’t wait to see your story take the stage! 🎤

👑 Queen Spotlight: Katherine Howard 💖

Queen Spotlight: Katherine Howard

✨ “The Flirt” ✨

Katherine Howard is bubbly, playful, confident, and full of charisma. She lights up the stage with infectious energy—but as her story unfolds, audiences discover a deeper, more emotional side. This role requires a performer who can balance fun, humor, vulnerability, and powerhouse vocals.

🎤 Featured Songs to Prepare:

* Cabaret — Cabaret
* One Last Time — Ariana Grande
* What I Know Now — Beetlejuice
* Hold It Against Me — Britney Spears

💡 What We’re Looking For:

* High-energy performer who commands the stage
* Strong pop-style vocals with excellent range and control
* Confident dancer or strong mover
* Big personality with natural charisma and audience connection
* Ability to transition from playful comedy to genuine emotional storytelling
* Stamina to maintain excitement and vocal quality throughout a fast-paced 90-minute show

👑 Director’s Tip:
Don’t just play “cute.” Katherine Howard’s journey has incredible emotional depth. Show us you can captivate the audience with both your confidence and your vulnerability.

🎭 Can you bring the sparkle, sass, and heart to become our Katherine Howard? Auditions are coming soon! 💖

🎭 Director’s Tip #3:
You Don’t Have to Be the Best Dancer

One of the most common worries we hear is:

“I’m not a dancer.”

Here’s the good news…

At a dance audition, we’re not looking for perfection. We’re looking for performers who are willing to learn.

We notice students who:
✨ Give their best effort
✨ Smile and perform—not just memorize the steps
✨ Stay focused, even if they make a mistake
✨ Keep going instead of giving up
✨ Take corrections and apply them

Everyone misses a step now and then. What makes someone stand out is their attitude, confidence, and determination.

Remember, dance can be taught.

A positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and the willingness to grow are qualities every director values.

So when it’s your turn on the dance floor…
🎶 Take a deep breath.
😊 Smile.
⭐ Perform with confidence.
💛 And most importantly—have fun!

Sometimes the student who isn’t the strongest dancer leaves the biggest impression because they never stop performing.

🌈 Every step is an opportunity to show us who you are.
