🎭 Director’s Tip #10: The Qualities Every Director Hopes to Find
As we wrap up our Director’s Tips leading up to The Wizard of Oz auditions, I want to share something that goes beyond singing, dancing, and acting.
After directing many productions, I can tell you that the students who leave the biggest impression aren’t always the ones who are the most experienced.
They’re the ones who bring these qualities into the room:
⭐ Confidence — Not believing you’re perfect, but believing you have something valuable to offer.
🎭 Courage — Being willing to take a risk, make a bold choice, and step outside your comfort zone.
👂 Teachability — Listening to direction and being willing to try something differently.
💪 Work ethic — Showing up prepared, working hard, and giving your best even when things get challenging.
🤝 Kindness — Supporting the people around you and remembering that theatre is a team sport.
❤️ Passion — Caring about the story and wanting to make the production the best it can possibly be.
🌱 Growth mindset — Understanding that you don’t have to know everything. You’re here to learn.
And perhaps most importantly…
✨ Joy.
We want performers who love being on that stage. Who get excited about telling a story. Who celebrate when someone else succeeds. Who walk into rehearsal ready to create something together.
Because here’s the truth:
We aren’t just casting characters. We’re building a cast.
And the cast is going to spend a LOT of time together. The way you treat others, respond to challenges, and contribute to the rehearsal room matters.
So when you walk into your Wizard of Oz audition, don’t try to be the person you think we want to see.
Be prepared. Be brave. Be kind. Be teachable. Be YOU. 🌈
You may not know what role you’ll walk away with.
But you have complete control over the kind of performer—and the kind of cast member—you choose to be.
🎭 That’s what we’re hoping to find.
