Did you know that Jean Toomer, author of Cane, discovered the characters for his popular book while working as a temporary principal of a Black school in rural Georgia? His book would become a key influencer during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. As a mixed-race young man, Toomer journeyed to Sparta in search of his identity, which he found in the lives of its residents.

The traveling exhibit “African American Distinguished Georgia Writers” will be on display at Manchester Public Library now through Sept. 4, in partnership with the Georgia Writers' Museum and Georgia Public Library Service.

Library patrons are invited to check out works by featured authors during their visit. Sponsors for this exhibit include Georgia Humanities, Southern Literary Trail, and Vizitech.

What propels a young, Black, poverty-stricken girl in the Jim Crow South to rise to worldwide prominence as a Pulitzer Prize-winning author? The Alice Walker story is one of courage, determination, and grit that will inspire students to reach for excellence despite having to deal with major emotional barriers. Alice has written over 35 books and, at age 80, continues to serve those seeking a world that works for all.
