"Why are you wasting your time worrying about what horses are doing when you're a goddamned unicorn?"
I know what you’re thinking, who was the lyrical gangster, the bard of our day, the PROFESSIONAL who dropped this gem.
It was me you guys. I am that brilliant creature.
During a coaching session a client was talking about the work that she was doing, and that she felt like her friends and family weren’t acknowledging the leaps she was making in building her business. It really hurt her.
This happens a lot when you put yourself out there and try something no one around you has done before, it can be shocking for people.
You see, they have spent a lot of their lives telling themselves that the types of things that you are doing are too risky, that it would never be successful, that they have too much to lose - these excuses have stopped them from being brave enough to try.
But, instead of looking up at you, and being inspired by you flying through the sky like the living rainbow that you are, they keep their heads down and keep eating grass. Not because you aren't amazing, but because seeing you successfully chase your dreams forces them to reflect in a way that isn't comfortable.
This is a rarely mentioned challenge in doing something outside of the norm. Its happened to me too many times for me to count. Its painful, and lonely but it is also really illuminating!
If there are people in your life who aren’t cheering you on as you work towards your goals here is what you can do:
✨Mentally acknowledge that because of certain limitations they aren’t able to support you right now
✨Remind yourself of why this dream is so important to YOU
✨Finally, don't put any weight into what they think of you - they don't understand you, and that's ok!
Now that you’ve stopped worrying about the horses, start looking for other unicorns like yourself! Or, look for horses who want to be unicorns. Start cheering them on, support them, mentor them, acknowledge them, get out there and connect with them. These are the people whose opinions matter, because they understand what it's like to believe in something so much that you suddenly learn how to fly. 🦄🌈
