🌿 PRESENT-MOMENT AWARENESS 🌿

How often are we physically in one place—but mentally replaying what already happened or worrying about what might happen next?

Present-moment awareness, a core process in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), is the practice of gently returning our attention to what is happening right now.

It isn’t about clearing the mind, ignoring difficult feelings, or forcing ourselves to feel calm. It is about noticing our internal and external experiences with openness—so we can respond intentionally instead of reacting automatically.

Try this simple reset:

✨ Pause and take one slow breath.
✨ Notice five things you can see.
✨ Notice three things you can hear.
✨ Notice what you feel in your body.
✨ Ask: “What matters in this moment—and what is one small action I can take?”

We can practice this ourselves and model it for the children and adults we support.

You don’t have to control every thought or feeling. You can notice it, make room for it, and gently return to what matters.

Today, give yourself permission to pause, notice, and return. 🌱

What helps bring you back to the present moment?

GENERALIZATION FRIDAY

"Can They Do It Everywhere?"

A skill isn't truly useful if it only happens during therapy.

One of the most important goals of ABA is generalization.

We want skills to occur:

🏠 At home
🏫 At school
🛒 In the community
👩‍🏫 With different adults
👫 With peers

Teaching a skill is only the beginning.

Helping that skill transfer to real life is where meaningful progress happens. Generalization across settings, people, and materials is a critical component of effective intervention.

BEHAVIOR FACT THURSDAY

"Behavior Happens for a Reason"

Behavior is communication.

Before we can effectively address a behavior, we need to understand why it is occurring.

Behavior analysts examine:

🔹 What happens before the behavior
🔹 The behavior itself
🔹 What happens afterward

This helps identify patterns and guide intervention decisions based on assessment rather than assumptions. ABA focuses on understanding the relationship between behavior and environmental variables.

When we understand the function, we can teach better alternatives.

SKILL SPOTLIGHT

"Why Functional Communication Matters"

Many challenging behaviors occur because a child doesn't yet have an effective way to communicate their needs.

Teaching communication skills can help replace behaviors such as:

• Crying
• Aggression
• Elopement
• Property destruction
• Self-injury

Communication can look different for every learner:

🗣️ Speech
📱 AAC devices
✋ Sign language
🖼️ Picture exchange
👆 Gestures

The goal is not spoken language.
The goal is effective communication.

Every individual deserves a voice.

QUICK PARENT TIP

"Catch the Good Stuff"

Want to increase a behavior?

Try noticing and praising it immediately.

Instead of:

❌ "Stop yelling."

Try:

✅ "I love how calmly you asked for help."

Behavior that contacts reinforcement is more likely to occur again in the future. Reinforcement is one of the most researched and effective tools in behavior analysis.

Small moments matter.

Look for opportunities to reinforce:

⭐ Waiting
⭐ Sharing
⭐ Asking appropriately
⭐ Following directions
⭐ Trying something new

MYTH VS FACT

MYTH: ABA is about making children comply.

FACT: Modern ABA focuses on teaching meaningful skills that improve quality of life, independence, communication, safety, and participation in everyday activities.

Effective ABA programs are individualized and based on assessment, family priorities, and ongoing data review. Ethical ABA emphasizes dignity, assent, and socially significant outcomes.

At Behavior Advocates, our goal isn't compliance.
Our goal is helping individuals build skills that matter to them and their families.

💬 What is one skill that would make life easier for your child right now?

ABA Isn’t Just for Autism… It’s the Science of Behavior.

Tonight reminded me why I love behavior analysis.

Our first personal training session with Archer Fitness wasn’t just about lifting weights—it was about applying the same principles I use every day as a BCBA.

✔️ Breaking complex skills into manageable steps
✔️ Immediate feedback to improve performance
✔️ Reinforcement for effort and progress—not perfection
✔️ Data-driven adjustments based on performance
✔️ Building fluency through consistent practice

Whether you’re helping a child learn to communicate, supporting an adult in the workplace, coaching a parent, or learning proper lifting technique in the gym… behavior works the same way.

ABA is the science of learning and behavior. It’s not limited to autism. It’s about understanding what helps people succeed and creating environments where success is more likely.

Tonight’s sequence was simple:

Learn. Practice. Adjust.

Then recover with a hot cup of tea.

Looking forward to seeing what consistency, shaping, and reinforcement can accomplish over the next few months.

Generalization Has To Be Planned

A skill is stronger when it works outside of the teaching table.

Across people.
Across rooms.
Across materials.
Across real routines.

Generalization does not always happen automatically. It should be intentionally planned and practiced.

The goal is meaningful progress in real life.
