ASUTR Adult Education teachers are spending this week at their annual Teacher Summit in Little Rock to network with other adult education professionals and participate in a variety of professional development opportunities. The theme for this year's conference is The Launch Box: Tools, Teams, and Community for Teaching. Today's program centered around methods of engaging students in the classroom. The workshop offered a variety of activities for teachers to participate in to see how students could benefit from their use in the classroom. Technology-based activities like online trivia, interactive educational websites, and computer-based learning programs can be intimidating for some but our teachers are working hard to learn about these activities and more that they can bring back and introduce to their students in their own classrooms. Other sessions throughout the week will include developing academic strategies for TABE test improvements, learning more about the new computer program Connectable, showcasing resources for English Language Learners, motivating and engaging students, and supporting students in overcoming educational barriers.

Attendees from ASUTR Adult Education are: Taylor Redic, evening GED and ESL instructor (Malvern): Deanna Parker, teen, GED, and IET instructor (Malvern); Christina Greco, teen, GED, and WAGE instructor (Sheridan); Jan Robertson, WAGE and ADA Coordinator (Malvern); Mary Matthews, teen, GED, and WAGE instructor (Arkadelphia); and Mary Moore, WAGE instructor (Ouachita River Correctional Unit-Malvern).

The Sheridan Adult Education Center has started a new project that brings community members into the classroom to interact with students. On Wednesdays, guest speakers from local businesses and organizations that make a meaningful impact throughout the surrounding area visit the adult education classroom to present to students and guests. These presentations are designed to connect students with valuable educational, career, and community resources.

The first guest speaker was Arkansas Army National Guard recruiter Braden King. He spoke with the teen and young adult students about the T.E.A.M.S. program, highlighting the employment, financial, and educational opportunities available through the Arkansas Army National Guard. His presentation provided students with valuable insight into potential career pathways and the benefits of military service.

If you or someone you know has a business or organization in Grant County and would like to present to the adult education students, please reach out to the Adult Education director, Lisa Carpenter, at 501-332-1915 and she will put you in touch with the Sheridan instructor.

The Malvern Adult Education Center celebrated not one but TWO graduates last Thursday. The first graduate, who chose to remain anonymous, came to pursue a GED as they prepare for a career in education. They studied diligently and completed all GED test requirements in just three weeks. With their freshly earned GED diploma in hand, this student will now embark on a new job working at a local school.

Sarah Murphy (pictured below) has been working diligently on her GED while balancing the daily responsibilities that most adults focus on: work, family, health and well-being. Sarah has studied and worked hard to complete her GED so that she can continue working and supporting herself and her family as she plans for her future. Congratulations to both of our recent graduates! We are proud of you and wish you luck, success, and a bright future.
