While it is tempting to wait and see if a struggling child will eventually catch up, delaying support can have consequences.

Learning gaps can compound, especially once the "read to learn" curriculum starts in 4th or 5th grade. Plus, knowing you are behind can take an emotional toll on your child each day, eroding confidence.

A lack of confidence can lead to reduced engagement and a downward spiral. It also makes the turnaround task of any cognitive training or intervention that much harder.

As tempting as it is to wait and see if your child will grow out of it, taking early remedial action as soon as you see signs of difficulty is almost always the best choice.

An auditory processing delay creates difficulties for a child all day long.

Difficulties range from social anxiety - as it's hard to keep up with fast-paced conversations with friends, especially in a noisy playground - to a lack of focus in class and with homework, often leading to an ADHD diagnosis.

Phonics is back! It fell out of favor because many children lacked the auditory processing skills needed to distinguish letter sounds, leading to frustration and a shift toward alternative reading approaches such as “whole language.”
