🚨 ATTENTION PARENTS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH IEPs! 🚨

Three years ago, IEP Consultants of Orange County took on a new challenge: navigating the college system and advocating for students with disabilities beyond high school.

One of the most important things families need to understand is that an IEP does not automatically follow your student into college. Before leaving high school, make sure you have copies of your student's most current IEP, evaluations, and supporting documentation.

Once your student enters college, they should connect directly with the college’s Disability or Accessibility Services Office and provide the documentation needed to request accommodations. Colleges operate under different disability laws than K through 12 schools, and students generally must identify themselves and request accommodations.

We learned firsthand how important this transition can be.

One of our clients had an IEP throughout school and later began struggling in her graduate program without the accommodations she needed. She contacted IEP Consultants of Orange County, and we worked alongside her for more than a year advocating, navigating the process, and helping her fight for the opportunity to return to her program with appropriate accommodations.

This Friday, she sent us a text message that reminded us exactly why we do this work. ❤️

Today, the team at IEP Consultants of Orange County had the opportunity to tour Urban Workshop in Costa Mesa, thanks to our friend and dedicated community advocate, Laura Hulon Costelloe.
We are incredibly thankful for Laura's time, generosity, and willingness to share such an inspiring space with us. Experiences like this remind us how important it is to truly know your community. When we build relationships with local organizations and passionate community leaders, we are better able to connect families with resources that can make a meaningful difference in their children's lives.
What immediately stood out was the incredible level of engagement. Children and adults alike were actively learning through woodshop, tools, hardware, engineering concepts, and real-world problem-solving. Every corner of the workshop encouraged creativity, confidence, and practical skill building.
Urban Workshop is much more than a place for adult hobbies. It is a learning environment where young people can discover their strengths through tactile, hands on experiences. Laura, who is also an advocate, shared how children who struggle in traditional, one size fits all educational settings often thrive in environments like this. She has seen firsthand how children with ADHD and other learning differences build confidence, develop practical skills, and experience the pride that comes from creating something with their own hands.
At IEP Consultants of Orange County, we believe advocacy extends beyond the IEP meeting. It means knowing our community, building meaningful partnerships, and helping families discover opportunities where their children can thrive. Vanessa Martinez was truly a lifesaver during one of the most difficult times in my son’s educational journey.

My son has struggled with attending school, and I had difficulty communicating with the school district and requesting timely IEP support. The delays left me overwhelmed, confused, and worried that my son was losing valuable learning time.

As a parent whose first language is not English, I often felt lost trying to understand special education laws and communicate effectively with the school district. Today I had the pleasure of connecting with Chaz Bowker, also known as "Chazzy Golf." Chaz is an adaptive golfer, content creator, and advocate who has become an inspiration to many through his determination and talent. Standing at 4'4", he competes in the Short Stature division of adaptive golf and has participated in multiple U.S. Adaptive Opens, helping bring awareness to adaptive sports on a national level.

What makes Chaz so inspiring is not only his incredible golf talent, but his message of perseverance. Despite experiencing bullying because of his disability growing up, he has transformed those experiences into motivation, proving that disabilities do not define potential.

Meeting individuals like Chaz reminds us why connection and inclusion matter so much. Every person has unique gifts, and when communities come together to support and uplift one another, incredible things happen.

His words truly resonate:

"Back in the day everybody got bullied for their disabilities. Now you're the one bullying the golf courses."

Thank you, Chaz, for reminding all of us, and especially our families and children with disabilities,that dreams have no limits.

Public service has always been one of the driving forces in my life.

One of the greatest honors I've received was earning the Congressional Award Bronze Medal in recognition of my commitment to volunteer service, personal development, and community involvement. That experience helped shape the person and advocate I am today.
