This summer, ONU student Jacie Horn went to South Korea through Dankook University. She shares: "I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Seoul while meeting people from all over the world. By taking a Korean language class, I learned how to communicate in a new language with those around me. During my time, I also participated in Taekwondo, learned how to make kimchi, attended a Korean baseball game, and experienced many aspects of Korean culture. Some of the highlights of my trip include visiting beautiful temples during class field trips and exploring the Starfield Library in Suwon! Overall, this has been an unforgettable experience, and I made countless memories!"

ONU student Elizabeth Burkholder went to South Korea through Hanyang's International Summer School (HISS). She writes: "Through this opportunity, I was able to study in Seoul alongside other students from all over the world where I made friends and was able to learn a lot about the environment around me. I took a Traditional Sogo Dance Class, where I learned more about Sogo dance, which incorporates traditional Korean dance with rhythms of a small hand drum. I got to perform during the graduation ceremony for all my peers in hanbok, which is traditional Korean attire. Another highlight of my time abroad was visiting Korea's largest island called Jeju and experiencing lectures taught by locals, followed by self-exploration and special tours. Overall, it was a ton of fun and I got to create so many special memories!"

ONU student William shares about his experience in South Korea so far this summer: "At Dankook university I had the opportunity to teach English and take classes and it has been an amazing experience so far. One of my favorite parts was teaching English to Korean students because of the friendships I made along the way and the opportunity to learn a lot about their culture. I also really enjoyed going to a temple and seeing a K-pop concert! Through this program, I have had the opportunity to meet a lot of different people from many different countries and experience a culture I did not know a lot about before going on this trip. It was also an amazing experience spending time with one of my ONU professors here in Korea and I look forward to reconnecting with some friends I have in Korea as well."

Throughout a career spanning more than 50 years, U.S. Marine Corps veteran and engineer Phil Wagner, BSME ’69, always chose the road less traveled. By embracing career pivots and saying “yes” to complex projects no one else would tackle, he was able to live in different countries and lead an unconventional life.

“Three prongs: love, adventure, and achievement,” he says. “That’s how you should live your life.”

In retirement, the Ohio Northern University alumnus is finding joy and fulfillment from a fourth prong: giving back. Not surprisingly, he takes an unorthodox approach to philanthropic giving.

At ONU, he established the Wagner Scholarship Fund for Engineering, which not only awards the largest scholarship annually in the T.J. Smull College of Engineering, but is based on a progressive scale of achievement.

“It’s easy to give money,” he says, “but effectively and beneficially giving money is another trick.”
