The U.S. House voted 214-191 along party lines on a resolution to censure Bowman for pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building on Sept. 30 while the House considered legislation to prevent a government shutdown. Censure amounts to deep disapproval of a member’s actions, but falls short of expulsion. Samantha Dietel reports.

A group of Republican lawmakers have released a proposal to dissolve the Wisconsin Elections Commission and shift the administration of the state’s to the secretary of state. Our Education Fellow Jeff Bryant reports on efforts by the charter school industry to oppose new legislation proposed by Democratic members of the US House to close loopholes in federal law that allow for-profit charter schools access to public funding. He writes: "Rather than responding to criticisms with a public examination, as public school educators have to do anytime parents and taxpayers bring their concerns to local school boards, the charter school industry’s response to calls for reform continues to resemble the hardball lobbying tactics of businesses—like those in the energy, to***co, and pharmaceutical industries—that have long resisted any calls for reform."
