"There’s just something different about August 28. From the August 28 of 1833, when the Slavery Abolition Act was passed in the British colonies, gradually leading to the emancipation of their enslaved Black people, to August 28, 2020, when iconic Black actor Chadwick Boseman passed away, this day in history is distinct. It tells a story." - Teen Vogue
Why August 28 Is Such a Special Day in Black History
So much has happened on this date.

How awesome! We have such a great community here in Madison!
“Would you like to CHIP?”
Many in our community who shop at any of the W***y Street Co-op’s three locations have heard this phrase. But, what does it mean?
The Community CHIP program is our oldest fundraising source, it started as The Madison Sustaining Fund in 1971, known then as “The People’s Tax.” The W***y St Co-op was one of the first sites of the CHIP program and has been its most generous. In 2008, the Co-op became the sole CHIP partner. The partnership grew exponentially in the subsequent years and in 2013, Community Shares of Wisconsin and CHIP merged to create a natural partnership that supported over 60 nonprofit groups fighting for social and environmental justice in Wisconsin. In 2020, we saw a record year, with $306,557 raised through CHIP!
CHIP funds have been crucial in supporting our member groups as they are nonrestricted funds that go to the “greatest need” at our member organizations and help to sustain the work through general operations funding and other programming that more restrictive grants cannot fund.
Without the support of our community members who choose to “CHIP” at the register, we could not do this critical work.
Thank you for saying "Yes" to CHIP at the W***y Street Co-op!
