Nell Tyner Bowen Obituary March 21, 2026 - Monroe County Memorial Chapel 03/24/2026

We join our Tift & Mercer alumnae community in remembering Nell Tyner Bowen, Tift College Class of 1949, who passed away on March 21, 2026, at the age of 97.

A devoted alumna, Nell studied music and English at Tift College, where her lifelong passion for education, faith, and service was nurtured. She went on to live a life marked by extraordinary dedication—as a piano teacher to more than 500 students, a leader in church and mission work across Georgia, and a faithful servant in her community and beyond. Nell served for many years on the Tift Alumnae Association Board of Directors and helped shaped the life and legacy of the Tift Scholars Program on Mercer’s campus.

Nell’s legacy is one of unwavering faith, a deep love of music, and a commitment to shaping the lives of others. Whether teaching, writing, or serving, she made a lasting impact on countless individuals.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and all who were blessed to know her.

With deepest sympathies,
Allison Harrison, TCS ‘14
TCAA President

* We are mindful that Sundays are important for many. Due to the University calendar, scholar commitments, and other events such as Easter and Spring Break, this was the only date available to gather. The luncheon will begin at 12:00 p.m., with the program starting at 1:00 p.m., allowing time for those who attend morning church services. The Tift Alumnae Association and Scholars Program continue to carry forward the same Tift ideals and traditions and look forward to celebrating with you at Alumnae Day.

ATTENTION Class of 1975 & 1976:

Part of the celebration of our Tift 50th Reunion Classes will be the compilation of a Memory Book—a keepsake that will be handed out to all who attend. A section of the book will contain biographical updates from those class members who wish to participate. An email was sent out last month with a questionnaire for you to fill out. Feel free to fill out as much or as little as you prefer. You can email your answers to [email protected].

All responses were requested by March 6, 2026; however, the deadline has been extended to Friday, March 20, 2026 in order to be included in the Memory Book.

Please feel free to pass this information along to fellow classmates from the classes of 1975 & 1976. If you did not receive the emailed questionnaire, please send a request for that to Christina Huseman at [email protected].

Cookstove project provides Mercer students with new perspective on engineering 03/16/2026

Lauren Folsom, a senior Tift Scholar and senior civil engineering major, said the cookstove project was an example of how things may be engineered differently in developing countries. Her group’s cookstove boiled water in about six minutes and emitted minimal pollutants.

“It was a good project to learn the different ways that we can engineer, and it helped us to be creative and brainstorm ways we can do things with different resources,” she said. “We’re used to one way, but if you go into other countries where they don’t have the same resources, they get creative with the way they cook.”

Lauren is a shining example of having a servant heart and being willing yo help those around her.
