📢 We’ve moved! 🌿

To keep things running smoothly behind the scenes, the Big Dog Garden officially has a brand-new page!

What a difference a day makes! 💙

Today about a dozen families put on their gloves, rolled up their sleeves and got to WORK!!

W**d pulling and whacking, garbage pick up, landscaping and even wall washing was done all in an effort to fill in the gaps that the district left so that the kids and staff can come back to a more beautiful campus. 🥹

Sad morning at the garden 😞
Our watermelon patch had 2 melons ready for harvest and we were waiting till back to school night in hopes of having students be the ones able to harvest.

But when I started watering the patch today I noticed our biggest melon was gone, then figured out a second was gone as well as 2 more smaller melons were pulled and put in other beds. (We still have 5 left )

And to top it off the patch was full of sand from the nearby sand box. 😡
Ripe tomatoes were also picked and smashed all over the ground as well as zinnia flowers.

I’ve always said how lucky we are that we don’t have much vandalism or theft, and we are lucky considering how open to the public we are….but that doesn’t make today any easier.

The garden has been busy!! We are so thankful to have so many wonderful community helpers ❤️❤️❤️

The “hill” has been cleared of the poppies(after we harvested A LOT of seeds-see Rao jar photo) so we can show off the Teddy Bear sunflowers 🌻 and we created another strawberry patch in one of the wood beds with plants that were in a variety of other comtainers but didnt perform this summer. We are hoping a new home will help them thrive after the winter.

We have started planting some fall/winter crops and can’t wait for the kids to be able to watch them sprout and grow when they come back next week 👀

so far we have carrots 🥕 radishes 🫜 and kale 🥬 seeds sowed and watered.

Here comes the 🌧️ and the end of poppy season in the garden….but what a season it was!

It has been a team effort the last couple weeks to collect poppy seeds as the pods dried out and their “windows” opened up. Between collecting during watering shifts, work parties and community garden visitors wanting to help we have a nice collection of seeds to use for next year!! Thank you to all our seed collectors ❤️
