What College Baseball Coaches Check Before They Watch Your Son

A father posted this week that his son's Division II program has 96 players: 34 on the varsity and 62 on a JV developmental team. 185 parents said they are seeing the same thing. Nobody explained why.

Tonight Coach Beede does. Division II has no roster limit and a maximum of nine scholarships, so the 96 is a choice and the 62 is the revenue line. In April I said every D3, D2, NAIA and junior college program would end up with a developmental team. Four coaches from three divisions have since said it on this channel. Last week Yale head coach Brian Hamm described the opposite model on Inside the Show, and in the last four days two Power-conference basketball coaches said out loud what baseball coaches do quietly: they would rather keep a fifth-year player than recruit a high school senior.

The 2027-28 FAFSA opened on September 23, the earliest it has ever opened. This is the first full application year under the federal aid rules that changed on July 1, 2026, and two of those changes hit baseball families directly. Parent PLUS loans are now capped at $20,000 a year and $65,000 per student. And a full scholarship can now cancel a Pell Grant.

And coaches are being very careful with the high school class of 2027. Your son is not behind. The calendar is wrong. Tonight, live at 8PM EST.

If you are a high school junior or senior, you have been handed a recruiting timeline: August 1, showcase season, the commitment post, and signing day. Tonight I am going to take that calendar apart date by date.

There is no signing day anymore. Coaches are being very careful with the entire class of 2027, and there are structural reasons for it that nobody is explaining to families. And the majority of college baseball players are recruited as seniors, often in the spring, after a coach knows what the transfer portal left him. That is not late. That is regular action.

Just play catch.

Someday, neither of you will remember what he hit in 12U. You probably won't remember the score of that tournament game or the trophy you brought home. But you might both remember those summer evenings in the backyard...

A glove. A baseball. A conversation between throws.

The crazy thing is, when you're living it, it feels like you'll have a million more of those nights. You won't.
