National Fire Academy:
Fire Investigation for the First Responder
Class will be offered at Robeson Community College main campus room 709
Friday September 1, 2026 6:30pm to 10:30pm
Saturday September 12, 2026 8am to 6pm

This 2-day course covers a basic overview of a fire investigation for the first responder. Students will participate in a live lecture that will review the basics of fire chemistry and develop an understanding of the role of the first responder in relation to fire suppression and fire investigation.

This course also stresses the importance of fire scene awareness, evidence identification, preservation and the basics of fire chemistry. Students will develop an appreciation for the convergence of suppression, investigation, science and law.

This course provides first responders with an understanding of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), its warning signs, and the impact traumatic incidents can have on firefighters, EMS, law enforcement, and their families. Participants will learn practical strategies for recognizing stress reactions, supporting fellow responders, reducing stigma, and connecting individuals with appropriate resources and assistance.

This hands-on firefighter course focuses on the fundamentals of Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) operations. Students will practice practical, low-tech techniques for locating, accessing, disentangling, and removing a firefighter in distress while operating under realistic, high-stress conditions. Emphasis will be placed on teamwork, communication, firefighter survival, and getting the job done quickly when a Mayday is called.

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

Be at least 23 years of age
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
Hold TIMS (FIP 7000)
Be Firefighter I & II certified for a minimum of five years
Hold Fire Officer I certification
Hold Instructor I certification
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK
