So that’s why Hagrid is named so…

'Hag' is closely related to 'hex', German 'Hexe' and Dutch 'heks', meaning "witch". 'Hag' comes from a shortening of Old English 'hægtesse'. This word had the same Proto-West Germanic origin as Old High German 'hagzissa', which became 'Hexe'. English 'hex' is a borrowing of this German word. Click the infographic for more:
