Happy June 1st!
The heat has arrived on the South Plains! With rising temperatures and drying winds, a little extra attention now will keep your garden productive and beautiful through the hottest months ahead.
✅ Water deeply and less frequently to encourage strong root systems.
✅ Add 2–3 inches of mulch around flowers, vegetables, and shrubs to conserve moisture and reduce weeds.
✅ Harvest vegetables regularly, including squash, cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes, to keep plants producing.
✅ Watch for pests such as spider mites, squash bugs, and aphids. Early detection makes control much easier.
✅ Deadhead spent blooms on annuals and perennials to encourage continued flowering.
✅ Fertilize container plants regularly, as nutrients leach out quickly with frequent watering.
✅ Continue planting heat-loving crops such as southern peas, okra, pumpkins, and melons.
✅ Prune spring-flowering shrubs after they finish blooming, but avoid heavy pruning of trees and shrubs during extreme heat.
✅ Mow lawns at the proper height and leave grass clippings when possible to help retain soil moisture.
✅ Check irrigation systems for leaks, broken heads, and proper coverage before summer heat intensifies.
🌱 Remember: Early morning is the best time to water, garden, and inspect plants before temperatures climb.
🥁 Our 1st week Winner is......Amanda M Webb!! 🥁

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. On this Memorial Day, the Lubbock Master Gardener Association extends our deepest gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to the families who continue to carry their memory with strength and pride.
As we enjoy the beauty around us, gather with loved ones, and celebrate the freedoms we hold dear, may we never forget the courage, dedication, and sacrifice that made those moments possible.
We remember. We honor. We are grateful. 🇺🇸
