Some coins seem to leave a very distinct metallic smell on our hands after holding them, but this is actually a common misconception. The smell is misattributed to the coins, when in reality there is a chemical reaction that occurs upon making contact with these metals that causes our natural skin oils to produce a smelly organic molecule.

The ionic compound called sodium chloride is commonly known as table salt. As is seen with many chemical reactions, it’s amazing that two very reactive elements can come together to make something entirely different. Salt is a flavor that has been fundamental to many dishes in mankind’s history, so it holds a special place in many people’s hearts.
