And the countdown ends with a WINNER! The champion of this year’s National Library Week Photo Contest and the proud recipient of our giant, out-of-this-world prize basket is Briahnna Palhegyi! Briahnna’s snapshots of her and Zoa Bucholz exploring the many “galaxies” of our library perfectly captured our theme: Space to Read – Never Stop Exploring. Her basket was packed with Sun Chips, Sunny D, Milky Way Bars, Starburst, Little Debbie Star Crunch, Cosmic Brownies, Moon Pies, Orbit Gum, Space Rocks candy, space themed bookmarks, pens, and other trinkets! Briahnna, your photos reminded us exactly what this week is all about, discovering all the ways our library is truly a space to read, explore, and belong. Congratulations, Briahnna! Your mission was a success!

Today is the first day of National Library Week! National Library Week is our time to celebrate the impact of libraries, the spaces that spark curiosity, fuel imagination, and connect people to ideas, information, and each other. From school libraries to public and beyond, these vibrant hubs help shape readers, thinkers, and lifelong learners. Today was Read Under the Stars Day (Pajama Day). Our staff even showed up in NASA pajamas! The winner of today’s National Library Week Spirit Day prize was Trinh Tran. She received a gift bag full of Sun Chips, Milky Way Bars, Starburst, Star Crunch, Cosmic Brownies, Moon Pies, Sunny D, Orbit gum, Space Rocks, bookmarks, and more. Our astronauts-in-training made bracelets so furiously that we ran out of wire! However, their “moon rock” creations were out of this world and I hope they loved learning a new skill. Mission Control was impressed. In our library, we don’t just read about new worlds. We create, discover, and never stop exploring. NLW26 Space to Read: Never Stop Exploring

Nutella is delicious!

As Artemis II astronauts reached a record distance of 252,752 miles from Earth, an unexpected object floated beside them inside the Orion spacecraft a jar of Nutella. It quietly became one of the farthest everyday items ever carried into space.

NASA confirmed the moment was not staged or sponsored. The jar was simply part of the crew’s food supply, drifting naturally in microgravity along with everything else inside the spacecraft.

The image creates a striking contrast between deep space exploration and familiar human life. Even at extreme distances, small everyday items continue to accompany astronauts on historic journeys.
